To Install-

Unzip the contents -
Inside that folder are the exe binaries.
Place them both in your plug-ins folder (typically UserName/.gimp-2.6/plug-ins

The filters are found at Filters>Steganography>Hide, and Unhide.
Use hide to hide your text or image within the image you have opened.Use unhide to view it. :)

If you get an "no such directory /ect warning" don't worry its a Linux thing. :)
Image

If you do the install correctly you should be able to take this image
Image
and open it in Gimp, then go to Filters>Unhide and choose a directory where you want the data to be placed that was hidden. You should get a text file you can read.

I didn't try with a lossless image yet. (hiding an image within the image)
Enjoy!
64 bit compiles attached here.Tested in GIMP-2.8.14 windows 8.2 64 bit.

You open an image
You go to Filters>Steganography>Hide
You select a image or text file to hide within the image you have opened.
Now you save the image you hid data into.
Now if you want to see the hidden data within the image
Open the image you hid data into
Go to Filters>Steganography>Unhide
Select a directory to save the UNHIDDEN data in
Go to that directory (browse to it)
Your hidden image or data (text file) will be in that folder.

Essentially you can send images back and forth to one another with hidden messages in them. :)
Pretty cool if you are a spy i guess. :lol

Not without the plugin installed within their Gimp program. :)
They have to have the plugin and Gimp installed to read your hidden files.

I wonder if this kind of software is used by those who build viruses and spyware.
Of course you'd have to modify the unhide part to make it work w/o Gimp.

I once gave a talk at our local computer group on encryption-throughout-the-ages. Interests me but very few others.

Steganography can be equated right back to ancient Greece where a message was hidden by shaving the messengers head, tatooing the message on his scalp then allowing the hair to grow back.

There is a lot of what is refered to as 'snake-oil' in encryption, so really the only trustworthy methods are those where the code is open to everyone for checking.

A good source of information is Eric Howes page, sadly not updated for some time so many of the links no longer work, still worth a look.

and the section on steganography http://www.spywarewarrior.com/uiuc/soft11c.htm

That's ok Kevin all they will get from my hidden messages are "HELLO FELLOW GIMPER!" :lol
Of course they will probably think that is also a code for something.

They can throw me in jail but i will never talk!! *pfffffftttt*

Steganography can often be easily either 'broken' or the encrypted message removed. Sometimes just save the image in another format to remove the message - not so good for a digital watermark.

However, I find all encryption fascinating, and steganography is great fun for sending messages to your friends.

For those interested, A good in depth article is here

grab the pdf.

It crashes with Gimp 2.6.11 on Win 7 - 64 bit. Could just be my computer though.

Bogus argument:) I can put my watermark on your images. I can even likely add my watermark to images you watermarked, and it may be impossible to prove that your watermark was there first.

Watermarks should be visible (but don't need to be big) to keep honest people honest. But they have little weight in court. If you want to prove ownership, show the same picture in better resolution, or uncropped. If you have put the complete image in full resolution on the web, the raw file is a clue, but of moderate strength because it is possible to create a raw file that will produce a given image so your opponent could say that your raw file is forged (and that his raw file is of course the real one).

This is a cool concept. Just goes to show that there are many layers to the world that we don't see unless we know where and how to look.
