Christmas Ornament script (visit the page and click on the "Download" button).
It's rather crude (the Map Object plug-in is a bit of a bear to script) but perhaps somebody can do something with the code. It has not been extensively tested so do not be surprised if you encounter bugs (I suspect that in rare cases, some non-square layers that are offset within the image might cause problems).
The script adds a command ("Filters->Map->Christmas Ornament") that works with either the current layer or the selected region of the current layer if there is a selection present. If the region is not square then it will first be fitted within a square region ("letterboxed") using the current background color. The two background strips (if added) will be visible on the final ornament

To ensure that this does not happen, you should start with a perfectly square layer or selection.
