I was having way too much fun gimping around today and was curious if anyone might be interested in how to do this. I did it a couple of ways and not sure which one I like best. Maybe the dark one?

Hey, now that's cool. I like that.

Thanks, Nix. I've been working on it all day and writing a tutorial but I need to go thru it one more time to make my edits and add the screenshots. I tell you what, I have a newfound and deep respect for all the folks that write tutorials.

I like them both, but the top one has more color depth. :)

I love both too. It is a hard decision for me to pick, I love the bottom one because of the shine and the top one for the richness in the color and depth. very good work

To write a tutorial that makes the method easy for the user is not easy to do.

I love both of your effects, Draco. Very cool. Looking forward to your tutorial.

Thanks for all the positive comments everyone. It turned out better than I expected and I'm still not entirely happy with the little spot shadows but it was getting late last night and I wanted to get it posted. This is just a copycat piece of work as it was originally a PS tutorial that really caught my eye. It took quite a bit of trial and error to duplicate some of the steps in GIMP and I never was able to get it just right. Lyle might have made short work of it since he only has like a million or so filters (love to see his 2.6 folder)

I'll try and finish the tutorial soon but I have to basically recreate each step again to get the screenshots and get it all asembled. Since this is my first real attempt at a tut, it may take me a while but I'll git 'er done.

I do have a question. There was one image I could not seem to duplicate. Anyone know how to make this melted plastic look without 27 steps? Also the other one is fibers. I remember seeing a tute somewhere about making fibers. Anyone know how to do these?

Fibers are somewhat easy to do using Clouds, I have an updated tutorial on that somewhere here on Gimp Chat.

The first example I give, IGNORE it, but check out the new example afterwards, located here:
