Hi,

Please, how can I achieve brush dynamics in GIMP 2.8 such as the one in the attached Photoshop tutorial without using any third party script?

Not perfect but a quick guide, open the brush dialogue and click on highlighted section 1, this should bring up your brush dynamics editor, you can controll the spacing of your brush by adjusting the value in the highlighted section 2.

Image

By clicking the highlighted section 3 a drop down menu will appear and by choosing you desired options then you can adjust the curves of the brush dynamics to finely tune the effect.

Using the dynamic settings as seen in the above images created my framing effect, not quite what you are after I don't think.

Hi he4rty,

"Not perfect" is my problem, too. What you're getting is what I was getting when I played around with the dynamic settings in GIMP 2.8.

Well, I'll try to describe the steps that I have personally followed in order to reproduce the example illustrated in your PDF.

Create a new Dynamic via the special button or menu command available at the Paint Dynamics dialog, then double click, if necessary, on the newly created preset so as to activate and show up the Paint Dynamics Editor. Here you will refer to the "Mapping Matrix" dock, where you have to enable only the checkbox at which the "Angle" row and the "Fade" column intersect.
Go to the Tool Options dialog corresponding to the desired Paintbrush tool, pick the "Sawtooth Wave" item from the "Repeat" option and set the "Fade" slider to 150 more or less, choosing "%" as a unit of measure.

Regarding the selected brush, I suggest setting the spacing to about 10, a value which actually seems to be suitable for getting a nice wireframe effect.

Thanks for that Gino, fairly straight forward in the end although I was surprised at how much the fader slider effected the outcome.

Now, there is also the path-inbetweener method :)

Hi Molly, you are right about Ofnuts image. I only hope one day GIMP could have capability to achieve things like that without having to install scripts individually.

You're welcome, joseph. :)

Also notice that, once you have created the simple Dynamics preset I suggested in my previous post, it is possible to increase or reduce the smoothness of transition beetween the brush marks by just tuning the spacing of the selected brush as well as by adjusting the "Fade length" in the Paint Tool Options dialog, as you can see in the snapshot attached below.

If standard Gimp were the combination of what each user would like it to be, a new install would be 2GB and you would have 2000 entries in Filters alone.

Plus I wouldn't have anything to do during boring project meetings...

Just so you won't be too bored with all these meetings why don't you show us how to put a (wire frame-shawl around this person. Can you make it to drape around the neck and shoulders?

Something like that ofnuts but instead of around the head it goes around like a cape and full in the front. I have been looking for pics in bing but haven't found exactly what I mean yet but it is still the wire effect I like about it,
This is the shape but replace the fur with the mesh giving the fullness at the front.

My best... the script isn't really meant to provide such a stringent control on the intermediate paths.

Since Photoshop had a 5 year head start, it might take Gimp another 5 to catch up and bypass.
Photoshop = 1990 Gimp = 1995

You're right Molly. And BTW GIMP development lost on time between GIMP 2.6 and GIMP 2.8, which was the longest in its development periods (almost 4 years). But I think it's understandable since GIMP development only benefits from well wishers or volunteers.

Not withstanding all the above observations, it remains my favorite image editor.
