I am including 2 scans from an old negative, each scanned differently. The full neg is 6x8 inches. The scans are from an area of about 1/2 inch square. Can the license plate on the car be made readable or is this beyond a GIMPERS ability? I'd like to know what year this photo was taken.

The car appears to be a mid-30s Chrysler Imperial (1936?). I am unable to make out the year on the plate but if you know what state the plate is from, it might be possible to determine the year from the style (for example, if that were a Michigan plate then the year would most likely be 1935).

That is a very interesting link. Thank you. Yes, this is Michigan. I will get a lot of use out of it.

But I still want to read the plate if possible.

Just a side note. The car is in the driveway of the home of Lloyd Copeman ( http://www.lloydcopeman.com/ ), one of Lapeer, Michigans claims to fame.

I'd tentatively agree with saulgoode; about the best I can fiddle so far is making what appears to be a "5" appear in the lower right-hand corner of the plate. I tried the standard unsharp mask and played with various settings, a GEGL unsharp mask, and things like isophotes from GMIC with the settings cranked up. Note that none of my attempts could bring out the numeral second to the right, nor either of the lower-left digits. This is with the GEGL unsharp mask - actually ran it twice. The first time I ran it on the whole image with the standard deviation at 20.00 and scale at 1.00; the I re-ran it on the just-unsharped image with the standard deviation at 10.00 and scale of 1.00:

Ok, I'll live with that. I appreciate your help. That is really zooming in. Can't expect much out of such a small spot. But I agree that it is a 1935 from the link that saulgoode included in his post.

What I would do, is rescan the negative, zooming on the plate and opting for the highest possible resolution. Just an idea.
