Hasn't done so for me for awhile.
I have tried quite a few times in colour to alpha and the only 'colour' that will go completely transparent is white. Black doesn't budge. I just tried Hearty's tutorial viewtopic.php?f=23&t=7996&p=103642#p103642 and couldn't get past making the grid and blurring it.
EDIT: Does in previews.

The only thing I can think of at the moment is your layer doesn't have an alpha channel, if the layer has no alpha channel then the layer name will be in bold, if it does then the layer name will be normal text.

You could just for the tutorial colour select the black and delete, it would also be interesting if this works as well.

You might want to use colours>levels, changing the setting to Alpha.

Thanks, I will try that another time Erisian.

Hearty I had another go at it but still didn't get the shiny look or colour showing through Did I miss a step? I did it a few times from the start and this is the best I have got.

It definately looks to be the very top layer "Pattern" has not become transparent enough. I'm not really sure now as to why that feature would not be working on your version.

I'll attach my XCF for you to look at.

theres another way of removing a specific colour:
set the Mode of a brush to `Colour Erase` (make sure the layer has an alpha channel), choose your colour then (un)paint

Excuse me for asking the obvious, but did you select black as the color to erase in the C2A dialog?

Showed the layers but I couldn't see any difference there really - weird.

The pattern as displayed in your screenshot doesn't look at all like the one in the XCF you posted. And the XCF you posted looks fine....

Here is what I see, next to your screenshot... Some differences, including the names of the layers. We can't be talking about the very same picture.

I 'think' I was missing one layer. Tried to follow Erisian's suggestion re using levels but only got the black to grey. Got shiny metal this time but no colour at all showing through.

Um ofNuts, I didn't post an xcf........He4rty did

Sally, did you have your lock turned on when you ran the shadow layer? That layer the way it is will be blocking the color BG from shining through.

I'll try it again when I get home
Thankyou FB and Molly.

@Molly I am following all the shown steps. What do I have to lock? Is it supposed to go clear after I run the drop shadow?
I have an xcf of the one I just did. it is the wedpm (disregard the other attachment)

sallyanne: i just looked at your xcf and it's just like molly says. the alpha channel is locked on your pattern layer and if the alpha channel is locked then of course you will never get any transparency that you didn't already have. just uncheck the "lock alpha channel" box above the layer and you'll be alright.

Just tried it again and same thing. I am not locking the alpha channel until the tutorial says.

Sallyanne - Graechan has just done a script of the tutorial, it would be interesting if you ran it and let us know what happens.

sallyanne: okay, so it's not that then. hmmm, you don't happen to have an alternative gimp copy to try this on? a portable version for example?
