I just got a new laptop with Windows 8 (ugh) but anyway, I download the latest gimp 2.8 (6 year user of previous versions). I go to create a gif file sadly I am not getting the "export image as gif" option box? Is this an issue with windows 8? Is there anything I can do? Without the ability to .gif I'm dead in the water so to speak?

That's strange, did you download the official version of Gimp 2.8.4?
When you export are you using the, Select File Type (By Extension)?
What are your steps?

Gimp 2.8.0 is from last Spring, try 2.8.4 from the link in my first post.

Same exact problem here, but re-installing 2.8.4 didn't help. I tried to link screenshots of exactly what I am doing, but it won't let me.

Do you have a file called plug-in-file-gif.ui in your Gimp installation tree? (in '/usr/share/gimp/2.0/ui/plug-ins/plug-in-file-gif.ui' on Unix). There should be a plug-in-file-png.ui in the same directory (if your PNG options dialog is functional). Is plug-in-file-gif.ui OK? (14566 bytes in Gimp 2.8.4, and should be readable).

It sounds like you need to uninstall gimp, clean out any folders from it, and start with a new install. If you click the download icon in my signature, you can get a new version of gimp 2.8.4

After you un install REMOVE the user/.gimp-2.8 folder before installing a newer download.
This resets all preferences to default and Gimp will recreate them at your first Gimp launch.

Also be sure to remove the gimp-2.8 folder from the Programs directory. Sometimes even after an uninstall remnants can be left behind.

Re-install gimp-2.8.4 and try saving as GIF again.

IF that doesn't work do as before but this time go to partha.com and download the PORTABLE version of Gimp-2.8.4 and try that.It is all self contained.

Good luck. :bigthup
