Thanks Rod,
All I could find was this:
http://git.gnome.org/browse/gimp-help-2
I d/led and compiled it but it's for 2.6 only.:(
Gerard.

Edit: Look at this!
http://docs.gimp.org/2.7/en/gimp-concep ... ients.html
Exactly what is missing in 2.7.(scroll down a little to fig. 7.25)
I give up.

I wonder if this could be added to the c file for the tool options of paint brush?
I am not sure if that would work with the new UI though.
Well at least foreground to background with basic dynamics works.Don't know what to tell you if you want more than 2 colors though.

I have found that if you paint on a new transparent layer, you can then just select it (alpha to selection), and then feather by 25 then fill with a gradient.

Closest thing to brush with gradient in Gimp-2.7 you will get i am afraid.
For now anyways.Of course it will only look good with straight line strokes.
Making shapes with brush strokes is going to look bad.

I posted this on gimpusers forum:
http://www.gimpusers.com/forums/gimp-us ... elp-manual
As you can read in Alexandre Prokoudine's reply it now works different.
I did a "make uninstall" for the git version and then installed Gimp-2.7.4 from the Gentoo repo.
Same problem,grayed out options. :(
I'm beginning to wonder when 2.8 will be out WITH an up to date manual.
Gerard.

Hey Gerard i figured it out.You do have to create your own new dynamic for Brush to Gradient. This is how you do it.
Open Gimp
Make a new doc - doesn't matter what size
select the brush tool - select the gradient you want to use
go to Widows>Dockable Dialogs>Brush Dynamics
Select new dynamic (bottom of the dialog window)
Put in the settings in the images provided here.

Then mapping matrix

Test your brush.

Thanks a lot Rod.
This one is not grayed out like the other one and I can set it.
It paints fine.
However when I close the dialog Gimp segfaults.
I'll d/l again and hopefully it'll go away then.
Gee it is high time they start writing a new manual.
Thanks again,
Gerard.

Edit: Installed gimp-2.7.4 from Gentoo repo again.
Same thing, when I close it Gimp segfaults. :(

I am led to believe (because the preset saved for me),
Image

You need to either save the dialog opened or go to Edit>Pref>tool options and tick save tool options on exit.
Image

Then restart Gimp

If that doesn't work -
In your Tool Options folder (inside your user/.gimp-2.7/ folder)
Look for the file "gimp-paintbrush-tool"

Add this line in there -
(dynamics "Paint With Gradient")

Paint With Gradient will be the name for the Dynamic. :)

In addition there should be a new file named "paint-with-gradient.gdyn" in your USER/.gimp-2.7/dynamics folder.
I attached mine it should work.Just throw it in that folder.

Attachment:
Paint-With-Gradient.zip [2.9 KiB]
Downloaded 95 times

Restart Gimp.
Create a new doc and open the brush dialog set up your gradient open dynamics the new setting should be there. :)

Image

Enjoy!

By the way the settings i applied work okay for a 2 color gradient. You will want to adjust other settings in the dynamic to work for more colors than that. if you figure that out holler at me will you? :)

Thanks Rod.
My experimental install to use gimp-2.7.5 is now completely borked. :(
And at the moment I have a time consuming job in the house:
We have a complete internet package internet, phone and TV.
The TV connection to the modem was by powerline gadgets so we avoided to have to drill through walls.
However there's too much interference on the TV signal so I decided to do it by UTP cable.
Putting a plug on this cable is like pulling teeth.
Anyway it'll be a while before I can repair the extra Gentoo install and continue.
As soon as I'm finished with the TV I'll start on it again.
Gerard.

Well I'm finished with the chores.
And I repaired my experimental install.
I not only use it for Gimp-2.7 but also for other things like different desktops.
On my main install I use KDE but I'd like to try another one.
Anyway I recompiled Gimp-2.7.5 from git sources again and it works more or less.
When you follow what's going on with Gimp on this link
http://git.gnome.org/browse/gimp/
you'll often see things that have to do with dynamics.
But every time some other troubles show up.
I've had it,I'll wait until it's stable.
I'll keep using 2.6.12 in my main install and only use it when I need to change brush angle.
Gerard.
