Make your oval selection around the image using the Ellipse select tool and use these settings:

Go to Select - Invert and then press the Delete key on your keyboard.

I added a new layer, filled with the foreground colour.
Made an oval selection
Feathered the selection - Select >> Feather
Cut the selection Edit >> Cut
