google show plenty of tutorials that don't seems to require to be adapted to gimp.

But i believe you got a wrong idea that examples were created from a single photo
No all were Video , mostly time-lapse video..a bit as video of opening flowers...so all require not 1 but a set of photos created for that speciphic task, taken with a tripod, and if there are models must be quite patient and skilled

on the base of a single shot it is possible do something as this (note the solid color BG behind the moving phone)

(Gif is a illustration from http://trvie.tumblr.com/post/4719367752 ... aph-how-to but the author used a video for that not a single shot, but is no hard do something alike from a photo...again if the object move on a solid BG or may be on top )

I did realize they were made with multiple frames
this is 4 frames..about impossible for me to mask the birds wings
