I am in the process of building a website and am looking for a suitable graphic/logo. My own artistic abilities are (as many of you know) quite pathetic and I would appreciate any creative offerings which the talented denizens of this forum might deign to provide.

The website's name is "Kerosene Cow" (derived from a Robert Hunter lyric) and so I am thinking along the lines of some neon green bovine theme, but I don't wish to prejudice anyone's creativity.

No compensation is being offered other than my undying gratitude, for what little that's worth (and even that should, despite its intimation, expire upon my death :) ).

Your bovine theme sounds intriguing. I have little or no ability to draw so I won't even attempt.

Kerosene, I have seen it a yellow to neon green, changeable with the way the light hits it. I think they also color it red for some purposes or blue.

Perhaps my tutorial here might give some ideas. viewtopic.php?p=468#p468

Just a preliminary sketch. If it interests you, I'll do additional work on it.

Looks like I need to clean my scanner platen. :0

I also envisioned the cow standing with one foot on an Army dropbox, with "Kerosene Cow" emblazoned on it in Army stencil font.

What is the website for? What does the brand symbolize? That is the first thing I ask before creating a logo identity.

Here's something quick and dirty but maybe it will help spur some ideas. Maybe a cow's head where the O in Cow is?

Don't know exactly what you are looking for. Emblem, Artsy design, retro, or text effect, but you might consider all or some of these elements in this one.

Great job 'TUX! I like it. Is that a font or did you put the cowspot pattern in the text?

From what little I know, the various colors are actually dyes which represent governmental controls (red indicates non-transportation use such as home heating; blue indicates that it is "government-owned" fuel). I am not even sure that the natural color of kerosene is green, but it has always appeared that way to me.

MareroQ, that is a most excellent drawing and I would be proud to use it.

Mahvin, also most excellently done, however, I am not that great a fan of militarism.

GNUtux, that is perfect. Is the artwork your own, or derived from someone else's? (Not to seem unappreciative; I just don't want to encounter problems down the road.)

RobA, I don't know. I mainly want to play around with website design and perhaps share a thought or two on Script-fu, programming, and software in general.

Draconian, I'm not sure what I'm looking for, myself. Nonetheless, I figured GIMPchat should be able to step up to the plate (as it were).

Much appreciation to all.

The cow image came from this free font and the text was created with the bovination logo script (serif bold) so I wouldn't think there would be any licensing issues. Using "Free for personal use" fonts or dings on a personal website/blog is perfectly acceptable. It's only when you resell the fonts or use them directly for commercial purposes would there be a problem.

Here's the raw layers .xcf file.

The kerosene I've seen, including the stuff I currently have, is clear and colorless.

Diesel fuel and home heating oil are dyed. They basically are the same petroleum fraction. Diesel is dyed red for off-road use (i.e. farm use) and yellow for highway use - I've used both in my tractor and I'll pay the extra money to avoid the sulfur dioxide fumes. Home heating oil is also dyed red. Woe be the trucker that is caught with red fuel in his fuel tanks.

A thin film of kerosene (or almost any oil or petroleum product) on water will reflect different colors depending on the viewing angle and the thickness of the film.

Probably a bit too much the photograph rather than graphic, but the cows were calling to me:

I ran across this set of animal dings. There are quite a few different bovine dings in there that might be useful for your project. They are free for personal and commercial use.

Thanks for all the great feedback. I have played around with a couple of different web frameworks and think I will try to build my own from scratch (see sig). Hopefully I will have something up in a month or two (in time for GIMP Day).

All of the suggestions are better than the one I came up with (below), but I'm currently leaning toward GNUtux's first offering; or a mashup of that text with one of the dingbat images.

Thanks, but I can hardly take any credit for it. :)

As do i :)
That is very original.

Although i have to say Tux's logo looked great as well.
I visioned a cow sitting in a camping chair with a drink for some reason. :lol

But as Rob replied it is best to have a logo that is simple, goes with your colors, and it goes with the site idea.

On another note this really cracks me up. :)

Well duh ... I already have that font. Just didn't realize that cool biker cow was in it. Oh well, I'm sure my biker friend will like it.
