PS

@Alec & Bilbo
Maybe it is not evident but is as this version of gimp has 2 users (let call them "No_extra" and "PC-Lab" each with his own preferences

So if you set the Help preferences in "web browser" as NO_Extra, that doesn't change nothing for the other mode, for the other user, that to get same result should repeat the operation

I found the issue with the missing layers dock in single mode, it apparently started with the movable divider moved all the way to the right. I moved it back out to open the dock.

The help seems to be working now, maybe restarting the program helped.

I am not able to get the "Smart remove selection" to work. The heal selection works which, I guess, uses the new resyntheizer versus the old for the "smart".

Thank you for your work on this package! I am getting to try a lot of new plugins that I never would have found or that I thought were of value to me.

I have only been using the PC_Lab English version

Summary to date of three problems:
Riot web print:
Running the installer *had* put riot.exe and riot.dll where they belonged in:
D:\PortableApps\GIMPPortable\GIMP-PC_Lab-2.8.2-32bits\PhotoComix\plug-ins\_Preinstalled\utils\ *GOOD*
Removed the riot-plugin.exe stopped the bogus repeated requests to install *GOOD*
and I still have Riot .... offered in File menu.

Gegl problems ... specifically Cage Transform completion crashes Gimp.
I believe the Jernej installer had this problem caused by a missing lib\gegl-0.2 folder which he resolved by issuing a "slipstream" 2.8..2-1.
Your 2.8.1 has lib\gegl-0.2 but not the copy of 2.8.2 I have from before your Riot "fix".
Have I diagnosed correctly? does your latest include lib\gegl-0.2 folder?

Help - I changed to use local copy (which is detected) and use web browser.
I think I understand you to say that this combo should not actually display in which ever browser is system default but in HTML Help. CORRECT?
In case it makes any difference I temporarily changed my default browser to IE-8 from Chrome (using Browser TraySwitch from DonationCoder) - same results.
When I hit [F1] or Shift+[F1] no window opens.
Looking in Process Explorer I see it briefly opens both
Help.exe: D:\PortableApps\GIMPPortable\GIMP-PC_Lab-2.8.2-32bits\lib\gimp\2.0\plug-ins\help.exe -gimp 7 5 -run 0
- and
web-browser.exe (version 2,8,2 build time 2012-08-23 23:46) D:\PortableApps\GIMPPortable\GIMP-PC_Lab-2.8.2-32bits\lib\gimp\2.0\plug-ins\web-browser.exe but this terminates with a second or two (maybe all its doing is checking that this isn't a call to on-line doc'n?) but
Help.exe remains running apparently doing nothing.

This should be fixed in the file on the server
Weird as errors may happen, i installed Riot correctly but when checking last details i noticed that file, " riot-plugin exe" left floating on my desktop, and thinking to a oversight i moved in the plugin folder
(as excuse i may only say that call the plugin "riot.exe" but the installer "riot-plugin.exe" may be confusing )

Correct ...the gegl folder is no more there!

but i don't think is missed by mistake, from the 2.8.2 release note

Quote:
- Remove all “Use GEGL” menu items, they only add bugs and zero
function

and for sure were radically removed, all the gegl operations seems vanished ...not sure if was a good idea to remove and if had unplanned side effect on the cage tool

But to test should be sufficient add back the folder, and that from 2.8.1 should be compatible
I am going to try but i never used much the cage tool so i am not too indicate to test it, anyway i may try

IN CASE YOU, OR SOMEONE ELSE WANT TRY, i zipped the folder and included below as attachment

also i am curious to see what bugs caused a so drastic decision,it is true that most of gegl operation just duplicate function , but a few (C2G, mirrors..) have no a equivalent and i like the preview applied to the image

On my laptop the help look as files/158_gimp-help.jpg
I can't understand why doesn't work for you , ...do you use XP ?...or what ?

I just installed the new version of gmic, did some inner cleaning but before update the file on sourceforge i would like find more info about the removed Gegl folder

Gegl that anyway is in the zip
(But please ... may be there some GEGL operation causing such critical errors to justify such radical removal...
i don't want make blind guess ,at the moment i don't know nothing more then the line i quoted, about removed gegl operations

PhotoComix has put together a version which includes everything including the kitchen sink. It has GAP included. It also has all of the plugins and scripts that Gimpchat members have found useful in the past. If you remember a useful plugin, but don't know where to get it, it is probably in this package.

If you like to explore scripts and plugins, but don't like the pain of installing each one, then this package is for you!

It doesn't make yet a good coffee but for the rest is quite complete

but i maintained well separated from the Gimp core everything i added, and this (that and a nice utility from Samj used also to preserve portability )make also possible run it as a normal gimp with no extra

no extra but all what should be, including help, support for python plugin and portability (and Ufraw to open files from digital camera )

basically a shortcut may start "Normal" gimp
and another shortcut a gimp loaded with all best script and plugins (and even some pattern brushes, tool presets...)

Hmmm ... I think that screenshot may be from Win-7?
I'm on WinXP SP3 32bit
In any case look at http://screencast.com/t/4BLfN5ym5BoQ (no block option on [General tab].) So turning to security tab shown. All users categories except Users [MYDESKTOP\Users] have all options except [Special Permissions] are checked. IMO the user that s/b applicable is Alec [MYDESKTOP\Alec] so I'll set Users "just-in-case" then try and figure out whether somehow [Advanced] can control something equivalent to [Blocked] / [Unblocked].

On WinXP it looks like "Full Control" is as good as it gets. (ie. I don't see any [Blocked] equivalent in the Properties menu I see.

@PhotoComix - I assume you are on Win7 *CORRECT*?
@ b10h4z4rd, Samj, everyone-else: Anyone have success getting Help to run from either Photcomix 2.8.1/2.8.2/Samj-2.8.2-1 (those are the versions I have on disk currently) on WinXP?.

Note: When I double-click gimp_2_8_en.chm in Explorer it opens with hh.exe as expected.

re: Missing Gegl-0.2 see my comment #15 https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=676468#c15
and Michaels #16, #17. Looks like they didn't realize (my guess) new in 2.8 cage transform tool requires GEGL, didn't think much of the other stuff reachable from the GEGL tool and axed the folder. Then Michael but it back and a replacement "slipstream" Windows installer was created - not publicized but version changed.

See also: lyjek - Mysterious 2.8.2-1 update in Windows release of GIMP.
viewtopic.php?uid=1903&f=4&t=5043&start=0

(Obviously not the same commitment as with the Save vs Export debate <BIG GRIN>)
Confirmed - after comparing lib/gegl-0.2 from installed GIMP 2.8.2-1 to your PC_Lab 2.8.1 (they are identical) I copied to PC_Lab 2.8.2\lib\gegl-0.2.
Now Cage Tool works (and the GEGL operations list dropdown is restored)

so - only outstanding issue I know is what's wrong with the HELP system. If /when I get a chance tomorrow I'll copy your 2.8.2 from WinXP to my Win7 laptop. (I researched a little more and it looks like its a Vista/Win7 feature only.

yes the screenshot was from 7 but was the first time i had a similar lock and only happened with that file.

The chm Help is from Samj http://samjcreations.blogspot.it/ maybe she may figure out better what went wrong, tomorrow i will test more on XP

Quote:
... as with the Save vs Export debate

I found long ago how to bypass the whole problem: for obvious reasons i need to perform both Export & Save , do simultaneously using the same filename and same folder is very convenient for my workflow , i agree that are 2 different things, but the most convenient is do both with a single click not waste time to debate the exact terminology

So i just installed globally the SAVE + EXPORT script of RobA that in my opinion is the most pleasant solution
(in the File/Save menu:
SAVE AS + EXPORT
and
SAVE + EXPORT this last only for images already saved )

I think i will update the file later in the evening, but i may already anticipate the changes

1 fix for Cage tool and gegl operations
2 Gmic updated
3 cleaning up of menu
(many script and plugin authors try to add the most different menu and submenu)
4 better selection of script and plugin
5 Restored the bigger preview for Gimpressionist, Map Object, Lighting effect, Depth merge, Fractal Trace
6 Save+ Export installed globally

Found this MSKB article that indicates it does/can apply to WinXP and that one of the file types it can be applied to is .CHM
Also that "group policy editor" can control (in a fashion I haven't figured out yet) whether the option to "block" is automatically applied and even whether the option to "unblock" is even presented.

It refers to something called the Attachment Manager (who knew!):

[Edit add: Its just barely possible that the fact you send .7z instead of .zip matters but I suspect that's unlikely. [/Edit add]

When I installed PC_Lab 2.8.2 to a subfolder, I would get an error when trying to use help that it couldn't find a file. When I put it in my c:\ root directory it worked good.

I am also running XP SP3 32bits and I have a block/unblock button. On a jpg that I downloaded, I right clicked and selected properties. It is located at the bottom of the General tab, below advanced. I haven't seen it yet on other files but jpeg, but I have only looked at a few.

@bilbo

bad that you too had problem with the help, glad you solved but your solution doesn't give me any hint for a fix (my local copy was not directly in C but in C:/Users/My name/Documents/... so a very different path)

I hope Samj could give a look to the problem , well actually the 2 problems a possible permission issue with the main .chm file that prevent the help to be executed but without popping warning or error messages, just blocking silently the bat files

and the broken path you refer

humm just by curiosity, you say it work in C ...could you check if would also work in E (or how your USB drive /external drive is called)

Bonjour,

For proper operation programs around Gimp you should not extract the archive to a directory whose name contains spaces or accented characters.
I recommend extracting in the root of a hard drive or a USB key.

:bump uploading now a improved version

changes :

1) Cage tool bug fixed and gegl operations restored

2) Gmic updated to 1.5.1.9

3) A lot of menu cleaning up

so many script and plugin authors try to add the most different menus and submenus, and their cumulative efforts tend to transform the gimp menus in really complex labyrinths
I tried to limit this as possible removing the most superfluous and bizarre additional menu and submenu

4) better selection of scripts and plugins

(several removed , several other added)

5) Restored the bigger preview for Gimpressionist, Map Object, Lighting effect, Depth merge, Fractal Trace

6 )Save+ Export , now is installed globally

there are so much complains about the new Save and Export policy and i found the script a perfect solution and a time saver
And will not leave any excuse for forgetting to save the original as xcf:
It is true that allow to do both, but Save is done first and is compulsory, Export is optional
So no way to forgot to save using it

For only export there are good old File/Export and as excellent alternative "Save for the Web(RIOT)"

7) Save for the Web(RIOT)

It was a little problem in the previous version ,fixed now

8 ) now Gmic is installed only for "PC_Lab" mode

For a very good reason, Gmic is updated very often
Maintain all its files in a dedicated subfolder inside "PhotoComix" (the folder that contains all the third part addon and tweaks )
make much easier to update :cool (to update without have to fight with lost, orphans or duplicated dll... :gaah )

PS about Gmic, in this version is fully portable:
the gmic definition files are stored internally (in "gmic-filters" folder) instead then externally as usual
Also i did a filters refresh before start packaging so all additional gmic filters from external sources are available out of the box

-------------------------------------
For the Mods

This topic may end here, i will open a new at soon the file is on the server
I believe this testing phase concluded and the next version sufficiently mature for a new phase

@Photocomix - I was going to post this as a rely to your post on [Mysterious 2.8.2-1 update in Windows release of GIMP] but wound up covering some other stuff so am putting it here instead. Ooops ... got warned when previewing and saw your post of new version -- I assume still in process as no link in the post or is it the original.

Anyway - read following in case it sheds any light. I'll try to find a new thread when it gets started.

OFFTOPIC - how do monitor for replies to topics you are following?
I set [Subscribed] and can see them in [User Control Panel] - [Manage Subscriptions] and check for new entries but was expecting/hoping to get an email notification. Not happening and I see nowhere to turn them on.

I also added http://gimpchat.com/syndication.php to my Thunderbird News lists but that seems to send only the first post in a topic (unlike the RSS for the Flickr-GIMP and Flickr-GMIC which send everything but unfortunately not threaded)

Quote:
I believe the folder went not lost for a incident , because the release note talking of "Removed gegl operations only duplicating functions and adding bugs" and the lost folder contain all the gegl operations ...can't be a coincidence
anyway seems evident that the removal was a error and place it back fix

Did you see the attachment in my reply ?
I saw the one for RIOT but had worked around it - the installer put the required riot.exe + riot.dll in the correct place. It was just a matter of deleting the riot_plugin.exe.

wrt to the gegl-0.2 folder I just copied from your 2.8.1.
Quote:
I did play a bit with the cage tool, still i don't handle too well but didn't crashed yet
My experience too. As soon as the folder is moved in everything just work :-)

re location/name of the top level folder: I had no spaces or special characters but did have periods in GIMP-PC_Lab-2.8.2-32bits so changed it to GIMP-PC_Lab-2_8_2-32bits
ie. its now at:
D:\PortableApps\GIMPPortable\GIMP-PC_Lab-2_8_2-32bits

When I ran it and checked HELP preferences I notice that Help browser to use has been "reset" to [GIMP help browser]. I assume that the name change to remove the periods triggered the maringouin_2_8.exe to rebuild from .INI files because previously stored folder/file refs are not relative and hence are no longer valid.

Now this is just weird. After restarting GIMP I hit [F1] and gimp_2_8_en.chm opened! I thought that somehow the stripping of periods might have done the job - not so fast!!

I closed the HTML Help and tried a shift+F1 with fingers crossed.
Sigh ... no response ... help.exe is shown as a process with no window as a child of gimp.exe by process explorer.
I killed help.exe and retried just [F1] - this time no response.
Closing and re-opening GIMP then retrying [F1] again no response.

No idea why it worked the first time above and then never again.?
Anyhow, I'll post this then try copying my WinXP Portable GIMP folder over to my Win-7 laptop to see it it behaves any better there...

Results if any later ....

Fine you replied

I may eliminate dots from the file name just to be on a safe side

Now in this version was still the gimp browser even if was removed long ago from the normal build but will fail to open a chm help even if will try (i keep just in case of somebody preferring to use the standard help in the standard gimp format, even if as far i know such help doesn't exist yet for gimp 2.8 )

But the internal browser can't display well the CHM help, must be used the web browser

Upload on sourceforge is painful slow (and no seldom abort) so it will take its time and i will not open new topic before to get the download link and have tested the integrity of the uploaded file

I notice in Process Explorer that on [F1] or shift+[F1] Help.exe fires first and about 1 sec later KeyHH.exe fires. If when the Help window is closed the KeyHH.exe closes but help.exe remains running.

FWIW - I've never seen KeyHH.exe run on the WinXP system.

[Edit add - after reading your previous about upload in progress] I figured that was likely the case. I'll wait till you announce successful upload. While you wait .... any comment about my off-topic question on how to monitor new posts to gimpchat .... i.e. is it possible to get email notifications of new posts to "subscribed" topics? [/Edit add]
