GIMP-PhotoComix_Lab-2.8.1

UPDATE
a few script were no loading , the theme were not installed globally and the version of gmic installed was..too much updated
fixed now with the beta of gmic replaced by the stable version

DOWNLOAD
Because of malware being found in SourceForge downloads, this link has been removed.

PhotoComix_Lab is 1 of the 2 loading option available that will run gimp with all the Extra described below:

BUT it is also possible run just the core, only gimp without extras (except that already integrated in the partha build , and the Help manual that i don't consider a extra but essential)

More configuration files are included (in the "More Configurations" folder) as example to run in Gimp-No extra or GIMP-PhotoComix_Lab mode in French, German, Spanish...
The

INTRO (you may want skip and go directly to "Main differences " )

First , about the name :

GIMP stand for GIMP http://www.gimp.org the most advanced and powerful Open Source Graphic Editor that is the core

More exactly the core is the windows portable version of Gimp-2.8.1 from partha and Samj (see http://www.partha.com ) that already include support out of the box for python plugins , normal on Linux but absent in the “official” Windows build , and some additional useful scripts and plugins .

PhotoComix_Lab , the fact that my nick is PhotoComix here is not much relevant :
PhotoComix_Lab indicate a version tailored for Photo editing and manipulations (and so include additional script and plugin for basic operation as open directly RAW files, correct white balance ,
add frame copyright notice and hidden or visible watermark...and so on )
and to convert Photo in Comix, Sketch, Painting, or even to create or maniploate digital painting and sketch ...and anything in between

Time ago I worked to a “Windows Friendly “ version of Gimp , here the concept is similar I did my best to make the most user friendly possible, the difference is that there I tried to create a version tailored on a generic “average users”
But I am convinced that no average user exist, as doesn't exist families with 2 and half children , or people driving 2 third of a car
Instead group of specific users do exist , and who interested to use gimp for edit, manipulate photo should find the best available, same if you use instead for digital painting

And include also tolls to add animated effect to your photo or drawing :
the Gimp Animation Package is included (also because could be used to speed up automatize many operation not strictly related with animation ) included also a few scripts and plugins useful for animation
(And animation may be saved also in Flash format or uncompressed AVI )

MAIN DIFFERENCES

The main differences with the classic build from "GIMP and GTK+ installers for Windows" Because of malware being found in SourceForge downloads, this link has been removed.

1) Support for Python plugin working out of the box

2) Help manual preinstalled , and is a Help updated to gimp 2.8 in CHM format ( thank to Samj http://samjcreations.blogspot.it/2012/0 ... -gimp.html )
(Instead the version of the manual available as "additional Package" from "GIMP and GTK+ installers for Windows" is very outdated, from 2010 and written for old gimp 2.6 )

3) Include the useful scripts and plugins already integrated by Partha :

Simple Bilateral Blur (edge preserving smoothing)
Save and Export: Allows you to save as xcf and simultaneously export as JPEG and/or PNG
Resynthesizer version 1.0
Refocus-it
David's Batch Processor
Exif-Browser
Wavelet-Denoise
Wavelet-Sharpen
Wavelet-Decompose
Texture Tiler
Fix Chromatic Aberration
Satequalizer (saturation equalizer)
Advance Unsharp Mask
Liquid Scaling (liquid rescale)
Separate+ (color management in Gimp)
Advanced Tone Mapping (faux HDR)
Recover Shadows and Highlights
ShellOut

4) more file format supported as raw (Thank to UFraw plugin), PDF , Openraster, WebP ..
Animations may be exported also in Flash format (.swf) or as avi

5) The best multifilters plugins are all included in the most recent version :
G'MIC 1.5.1.9
MATHMAP-1.3.5 (with several additional filters)
USERFILTER (aka FILTER FACTORY CONVERTER )
BEAUTIFY

6 ) Gimp 2.8 has a new improved brush engine , I included Gimp Paint Studio gps-gimp-paint-studio from Ramon Miranda that extend even more its capacity
Image

7) More scripts /plugin to allow commune operations on photo as add frames, copyright notices, visible or hidden watermark, correct withe balance, tonemapping, simulate HDR or old film or infrared photo or..., assemble in a calendar, denoise, sharpen, make seamless and so on

8) a Selection of Logo scripts , many from Gimpchat contributors as Graechan, GnuTux, Rod, Samj, other from Fenceposte, Saulgoode ...

8) A lot of cool themes ready to be used (included themes from Samj and Rod presented in the Resource Board )

Image

9) You may SAVE(.xcf) or SAVE AS(.xcf)and EXPORT( .jpg and or .png) simultaneusly (with same name in same folder) with a single operation

10) Bigger preview Windows for all those included plugin that were severely limited in their usability by a microscopic preview :
Gimpressionist
Lighting effect
Small tiles
Map to object
Fractal trace
Depth Merge

11) as default open in single window mode (instead then floating windows )

12) May be also used as portable, and may run alongside other version of gimp

Till here the good news :geek on the other hand :hoh

1) It is a very huge download :
because Python and Help files included, extra brushes, patterns, plugins and themes it is really heavy

2) Install will be slow
well to be exact no install is required just unzip the folder is sufficent, but unzip a such huge zip requires its time

3)LOADING:
You will see a lot of flashing black console windows flashing when loading
may look a bit disturbing but is harmless ... a few plugins were available only in a version that for a moment show the console,
that could be avoided only recompiling the plugins

4) Documentation
a complete documentation is not yet ready ...not at all :gaah
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
i forgot to say how to start THIS gimp from the first time , not clicking on gimp.exe but on
_Start_Gimp_PC-Lab.bat (For full extra available ) or on Demarrer_Gimp.bat (No extra loaded)

And i did not placed as first the most relevant point, is not so much important how it customized this version but that is modified to be more easily and quickly customized for what other exigences

in the extra is included a resources manager (Gurm) and is made easier temporary deactivate, replace or add or delete addon.

Humm..what else i forgot to say ? ahh of course the download link :yes

Thank you Photocomix, Gimp in its raw state is a very limited software now it still refuses to include long standing plugins such as

G'MIC
MATHMAP
USERFILTER (aka FILTER FACTORY CONVERTER )
Layer effects
and now also Beautify
or even help files

Instead the new user must search for and install these separately

I'm perhaps a bit opinionated about this because of the extra effort used to write scripts while remembering that the user may not have a certain plugin

But it was worse my first gimp was 2.6 in 2010 and the first tutorial I followed said to use layer effects inner-glow (head scratch) what layer effects, ah found it at the link on top of tute, but not working until I complete another tutorial on how to install python. Wow this tutorial I started was supposed to be simple.
2 days later finished a bevelled text tutorial that was supposed to take 6 mins.
Oh if only I had been able to install a gimp containing these.

@Graechan
most of your scripts are included
I hope included in their most recent versions and with all dependencies satisfied
i did some quick test and were all positives but you may check better

PS there are also some surprises.
As in \Gimp_PhotoComix_Lab-2.8.1-32bit\PhotoComix\brushes\Not-installed_ready
( ...i did that to make clear the use of the "Not-installed_ready" subfolders , the others are empty )

I have been using the lab version and so far , it seems to be running well. With all that you have packed in, it is going to take some time to get through it all.

The only item I could comment on is that when you call help, it says the Gimp browser in not available and prompts you to use the your web browser, which solves the issue. It is not really a problem, but I thought I should mention it.

I have an issue, but not with your version. It seems that any version of 2.8 will not fully run without an SSE capable CPU. I have to run it on a friends computer. Guess it is finally time to get a new computer!

Thank for reporting :tyspin
about the Help ,did not open automatically? i was convinced to have set in the browser options "web browser" as default" ..instead as default you got the error message ?

The gimp browser was removed long ago from the official Windows build, it is true that could be reinstalled but but would not work with this Help because is in Chm format ( the format normally used for the programs help in Windows)

The help included is also very different of that in "official" web installer because i installed the proper for gimp 2.8 , the installer instead contain a version from 2010 and is for 2.6
--------------------------------------------------------------------

Ps i found a issue and fixed but i didn't upload yet .

Anyway all the scripts in Gimp-PC_Lab-2.8.1/PhotoComix/script/utils will not load
A quick way to solve is move all the script in the File_load_save folder (that you will see empty) and then delete the empty "utils"
folder
Or may be fixed from gimp preference but only if you don't use as portable :
when moved on a different drive or directory gimp will use not the path in preference but the path listed in "PhotoComix.ini"
(It can't use the path in preference because they refer to different drive or directory
