I loaded the source and started to compile, but:

app\git-version.h, dated from 02. may 12 says: Git-Version GIMP_2_8_0_RC1-47-g5e9f1dd
almost all files dated 12. march 12, my last git clone dates from 03. april 12...

So I don't know, if it is really the gimp-2.8.0 Release...
On git, there has started the version gimp-2.9.1

Thanks for the link.I never thought of OpenSuse. :)
Gimp-2.9? That would be a beta / development release (un-even number).

More seriously:
The release of 2.8 is now official http://www.gimp.org/release-notes/gimp-2.8.html

Even if there is something weird : in the last part of the release notes (so scrolling a lot) gimp 2.8 is described as a unstable version
and there is explicit request to not distribute it without clear warning about its unstability

not sure if that was done by mistake or if they decide to release it anyway even if they don't consider it sufficiently stable
(that would be strange, still warnings in the note are very clear )

till here the good news, the bad news are for tablet users, this new gimp use a version of gtk that has the support for graphic tablet broken and the fix is planned for gimp-3.0 (that if would be no change in the development speed will be for 2018 )

Till them (so till 2018 ?) the release note recommend users of graphic tablet to stick to gimp 2.6

Is that the same version that has been used in Partha's 2.7.6 build? My tablet experience with that build has been fine thus far.

No the same version but the GTK used (and so the related bugs) should be the same

About 2 hrs ago gimp-2.8.0 became available in the Gentoo repositories.
I immediately installed it,alas the sluggishness is still there.
Set color management to none in the preferences and sluggishness is gone.
I tried making a rectangular selection but it's difficult to get it exactly where you want it.
Painting is less slow.
As far as wacom tablet is concerned my experience is that it works better than the mouse.
For the time being I'll stick with 2.6.12.
Gerard.

Edit: Concening GTK like it says in my sig my system is always up to date.
Gentoo devs do a lot of testing before releasing software into the general repository.

Yes the BABL, GEGL, GTK , ATK , GDK version as well as Glib are all newer libraries.
You find these things out quickly on Windows Msys/MinGW compiles.

Windows isn't too forgiving. :)

Yup even mine says RC1. Maybe they forgot to change it?

#define GIMP_GIT_VERSION "GIMP_2_8_0_RC1-47-g5e9f1dd"

I am going to go ahead and compile it and see. :)

A curious new about the most famous concurrent :
i just finished to download the beta of PS CS6(i think i was the last, they removed just now the file, or maybe they remove before but without interrupt download still in progress) and its file size is exactly 1.7GB

It seems that i am not the only one to not worry much about file size,( but 1.7GB looks a lot even to me ! )

i didn't try yet not sure

i grabbed it because it doesn't expire in 30 days but 1 or 2 weeks after the release of the normal trial version
and i thought that could be a advantage for the use on my desktop that has a broken internet card

Ok I have 2.8 compiled and installed now... and yeah the colour management still doesn't work, pretty much the same as RC1... so, yeah... I hope they fix them soon.

What does that mean, that colour management does not work?
How do you see this?
