Ok. Here it is:
Gimp is complete with all dll's.
What is "special":

1. I changed almost all plugins to horizontal. The standard vertical view makes no sense in my eyes, because most used monitors are more wide than high...
And that gives the opportunity to make the preview bigger.
2. It uses LCMS-2 (dll included)
3. It uses changed paintbrush-options. In standard, the brush can be 10000px size, the slider shows up to 1000px size. I use gimp mostly for retouching photos, mostly I use small brushes, so the slider is not very comfortable. In gimp 2.9.1 a slider with a logarithmic behaviour will appear. I adaped it to gimp-2.8.3, so the slider shows up to 250px size, but 125px is not the half of slider width...
4. It uses Jan Rueeggs Matting foreground selection tool with my "improvements". The standard foreground extraction is also there. Matting is just the same symbol in red.

Further on, I made a tool (with AutoIT), that makes every version of gimp to a portable version.
All necessary .dll files are in the /bin directory, so no other directory is needed.
The tool creates an userdir (.gimp-2.8) in the gimp-2.8.3 dir (where the gimp-run-2.8.exe resides), so the original userdir (in home directory) is not affected.
The tool is named "gimp-run-2.8.exe". There can (not neccessary) be a "gimp-run-2.8.ini". The .ini must have the same name as the .exe, otherwise it will not be found.
The tool can be renamed, maybe to "gimp-run-2.9.exe".
Then, a .gimp-2.9 directory will be created and the gimp-2.9.exe will be started, so everything after the minus sign is the version of gimp.
Gimp must be started with the gimp-run-xx.exe command, otherwise gimp will overwrite the .gimp-xx directory in home directory.
The tool reaches the commandline parameters to gimp, so it is possible to start a graphic with this tool (gimp-run-2.8.exe "d:\pictures\IMG_2322.jpg") or whatever you want.

So: You can unzip the file to any directory you want and start gimp with a double click on gimp-run-2.8.exe

i am a bit confused by the reference to 2.9

It is not gimp 2.8.3...or there is some switch allowing to run both version ?
the gimp-run.exe anyway launch 2.8.3

------------------------------------------------------------------

For the rest i didn't really tested but i used Onkel built from a few weeks and till now i didn't stumble in crashes or evident bug

And i found really nice its modifications to the plugin GUI, i think they will deserve to be included in the official version

(Yes Gimp developers actually are not interested to improve the old plugin if not to port them to gegl, but since this work is already done and well why do not use in the time while , for the plugin not yet ported as Gegl nodes ?)

You are wrong. The exe is not called gimp-run.exe, but it is called gimp-run-2.8.exe. And that is the difference.
If you rename it to gimp-run-2.9.exe, it will work the same way, but it will call the gimp-2.9.exe in the bin directory. So with this tool, you can turn almost every gimp version into a portable version.

PS

gimprun create a lot of problems with antivirus (most will try to delete, others will run gimp in sort of sandbox, or really slow down gimp because suspiciously monitoring any single process )not sure if that may be solved.

I have uploaded the files to

http://sourceforge.net/projects/gimp-packagers

The antivirus problems with gimprun is a known problem with AutoIt.
It a false alarm. I used the newest Beta of AutoIt. On my Comp, there is
no problem... Sorry, I cannot fix it.

Hello, I'm running GIMP 2.6 still. I was wondering if your scripts and especially the Jan Rueeggs Matting foreground selection tool will be incorporated into the stable GIMP 2.9 version or any future versions?
Also do I have to upgrade to 2.8 to use your scripts with the GIMP-RUN-2.8 exe command? Thanks in advance :gimp

I believe there is nothing certain yet

Not exactly:
You have not to upload to the stable version if you use the compiled binary (there is not installer just to unzip) and you may include gimprun there to make it portable.

This is if you run win in linux is easier compile from the source
( that as the binary and gimprun is on http://sourceforge.net/projects/gimp-packagers there see "files" and "Onkel Hatti" )

Sorry I'm not totally clear...I'm using it on a desktop win7-64 bit and using version 2.6. I can download from sourceforge and install the scripts in any Users/GIMP 2.6 folder or does it go into the program files?

Then I make shortcut on desktop -gimp-run-2.8exe to launch gimp? does it slow down the performance of GIMP or just the initial opening of the progy?

Do you suggest 2.8 over 2.6, any distinct advances where it's definitely stable and feature rich and highly reccommended to upgrade?

Thanks in advance PhotoComix and/or any other members :)

There are no scripts. The thing you download from sourceforge is a complete gimp.
There is no difference. But there is an additional tool, called gimp-run-2.8.exe.
This tool runs gimp as a portable version. It creates a user directory (.gimp-2.8) in the gimp-directory
and calls gimp-2.8.exe. Thats all.
Does it slow down the performance? No, just the first time takes longer.
Does it interfere with 2.6? Actually no, but: Windows needs many .dll files to run gimp. Normally it finds them
in Windows/System32 or in the system path. If the gimp-2.6/bin directory is in the system path, the .dll from
that directory will be used, even for gimp-2.8. This will fail, because they are too old.

Ahhh Ok I totally understand Onkel. Thanks very much for that  So GIMP 2.82 should be used to minimize the chances of this happening. If need be, can drivers for them be downloaded fromm an alternate area?
Thanks once again :bigthup

Drivers ? There are no drivers for gimp ...well your printer or scanner may need a driver but not directly gimp

on this version you may add additional script and plugin as in other versions , basically the main diffrence is a added selection tool and a cleaner interface and in same cases a bigger preview for the filters included

interested in trying this out, though confused about what needs to be downloaded, or if it can only be run in an external drive, usb stick.

Running windows 32 xp/vista.

currently downloaded
Gimp-2.8-portable32bit and gimp-2.7.4-portable32bit-rggjan.exe from partha's site

and the libgimpwidgets-2.0-0_32 posted by Onkel Hatti.

h'ttp://ww'w.gimpchat.com/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=2607&start=140#p75169

tried to download this version by Onkel Hatti though it doesn't exist anymore.
h'ttp://ww'w.gimpchat.com/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=2607&start=130#p74285

what and how is this installed, can it be installed if gimp 2.8.6 is already installed on the system ?

apostrophe's added to urls due to getting a spam warning.

Cheers.

@sandgroper, Welcome to Gimp Chat. After you make 5 posts, you will be able to post your url's
.
As far as RAGGJAN's Gimp goes, I had it installed on a USB and I ran it from that. It worked fine and the foreground tool was amazing. You could also install it on a CD. You can also install it right on your desktop, there are people here that run several Gimp packages on their PC.

thanks Molly

figured it out , and just needed to run the "Gimp RGGJAN Fork 32-bit" download.
came across problems when downloading due to the antivirus interrupting the download.
needed to stop the AV web shield to download it, and somehow stupidly copied the broken exe file "interrupted by the AV" to a usb drive to transfer to another drive.

wasted some time and installed gimp portable which doesn't contain the new foreground select tool.
couldn't install Gimp RGGJAN Fork ( not knowing it was a broken file), thought it was part of a complicated install package.

shut down and started this drive, mainly only used for the internet, and found the other RGGJAN Fork 32 .exe file downloaded when switching off the AV.

installed it the secondary partition on the HD, and it works fine.
it's definitely a time saver, and a big YES! amazing.
