I have to apologize to Partha for digressing. Cool that you are giving the Mac folks the gift you already have given us Windows guys Partha. That's what's cool about GIMP. GIMP brings Macs, PCs, and Linux users all together. That's why eventually PS will fail since they only trying to get the big kids (and make them go broke to boot; lol). United we stand and am greatful for the Mac and Linux guys too. :)

No need to apologize Lyle. It's all in good jest. I am still looking for some Mac testers. :)

I am happy to pass on what I am able to accomplish.

I am OK with PS. I think competition is healthy. DId you know that the new PS6 interface is almost identical to the gray interface I was/am providing for Windows and Mac. :)

I have CS5 but refuse to acquire CS6 which is the death sentence for me since any future upgrades past CS6 requires the previouse version (I was skipping every 3rd; went PS5.5, to PS7, to CS2, and now have CS5). Only motivation for keeping PS is RAW processing now (originally got it because it came with my laptop as part of a computer course I was taking). Anyway, again, I appreciate your effort. As for themes, well, I settled on the Green theme and a few custom skins but might actually go back to the default them maybe. lol

:)

@Partha...I would love to try out the McGimp! What all does it come loaded with? Hopefully G'Mic since I have forgotten how I installed it! Also, I have Snow Leopard, it that makes a difference.

Thanks 2-ton! I was hoping you and WW would try again. :)

It comes with all the Useful-Plugins on my Website preinstalled include G'MIC (1.5.1.3), resynthesizer, textureOps, aumask, wavelet-*, advanced tone-mapping, saturate, etc. I am updating 1.5.1.4 so don't worry about missing anything out. :)

Here is the URL: http://www.partha.com/temp/Gimp.app-2.8.zip
Yes, it makes a difference which Mac you have. You need Snow-Leopard or better. There is no support for earlier Mac versions, primarily because I don't know anything about them.

You can now use the "recently used" menu item as well. When you select rounded rectangle, you will see them nicely on your image. Don't panic if the Gimp menu does not automatically comes back. Simply click the image bar.

Let me know where it fails.

Thanks!!
Partha

Yes, sorry. I had 6 tabs open and realized that a few seconds before I read your response.

@Partha....lovin' it! Had a momentary problem with install...because I still had the other Gimp loaded...when I added this Gimp the name was changed to Gimp-1. I deleted the old and changed the name to Gimp and loaded like a champ. Very fast too.

Played with it a bit for some of small stuff...the menu filters working well..no more of those crashes as before...G'Mic seems very much improved in speed. I'll have to go back thru some of my notes and try the things I had issue with from the previous. But overall, I enjoy the look and feel of it! So glad to see sort option in "file browser" is er..ah...sorted out. The colored text of the file name...I didn't understand that at first but after a few runs of file saving..I saw what was going on there...great! Only maybe a brighter color? But can live with color...now that I've seen it a few times.

Great job!

WW,

Thanks for testing so quickly. I am glad to hear at least some of the crashes as gone and yes, it should be super fast. Try that D800 sample again. :)

As, for GAP, neither an yeah or a ney for now. When I tried this for Windows, I had all sorts of trouble. Maybe it will be easier on a Mac. We'll see.

Thanks again!!
Partha

I can't wait to download...hopefully I will be able to find time tomorrow night! Before I do, should I get rid of the other mac gimp we tried out or will this overwrite it? CAn I keep the old 2.6 I have stashed in my applications (it's my security blanket, I use it whenever I can't figure out the newer one or get a crash).

@ 2-Ton... I couldn't install the new version at first. When I downloaded it the name was truncated to Gimp-1 and was unable to install. I didn't care to keep the first version so I just trashed it and changed file from Gimp-1 to plain ol' Gimp and it installed. Maybe if you want to keep the old Gimp version, just change the name to "old gimp"? or something like that? (but I do wonder what would happen if the old gimp directories would get used or the new ones would overwrite them. Best wait for Partha on that one...

This just my two cents 2-Ton... like I said it didn't matter to me to keep the old version. So I deleted mine.

Enjoy when you get it going!

WW

Please download as soon as possible and test it out. You will find that the bugs you reported have been fixed. :)

You can keep your 2.6. Gimp will create a new user directory ~/Library/Application Support/Gimp-2.8 where it will store all your details. To be on the safe side, you can make a copy of ~/Library/Application Support/Gimp-2.6 (or wherever the older version writes its settings) and put it in a safe place. It should not interfere with your the actual app either.

As WW said, please delete the old Gimp.app. This one supersedes that version.

WW, Being a Mac App, there is no installation per se. :) Once you unzip this version, It will be in your download directory named Gimp.app. As you discovered, since your previous app was still in the same location, The OS, simple renamed this one. To prevent this behavior, move the old app to somewhere else or better yet, delete it as you did.

How are you coming along with the testing? Do you think it's ready for day-to-day usage? (I personally think it is, since I am using it. :))

@Partha...I've just a cursory look-see so far. I am impressed. It's not crashed once. The python applets or whatever it' called...still popup behind the main screen but I'm livin' with it. Not a biggie. Since I am thinking about it now...I will fire up that D800 file and play around with it.

Ya..I just download the file and opened it without giving much thought to the naming thing if I had a similar file. I figured out the prob..no biggie.

What I wanted to do was actually try to add some plug-ins and see how that worked. I am confused on the Gimp registry as what 32bit plug-in and what is a 64bit plug-in, cause I thought I had read only 64bit plugs-in would work on your windows version. Did I read that right?

Anyway..I digress. I think in next few days I'll have a good go at it. But so far, I'm lovin it. Stable and fast, even with my hard drive being a questionable external setup :)

Later,

WW

Yes, some of the plugins popup in the back. You can always find it in the dock though. So, just click on it on the dock if you can't find the popup window.

Let me know how it works out. :)

Yes, they are only for Windows though. You will have to get a Mac compiled plugin if you want to try them out. Let me know if you have something in mind. If it's photo related, I might just add it to my "Useful Plugins" offering.
