Hi everyone! It's been unusually quiet on GC this Sunday. I take it, it's due to the Holidays preparations.

Made this animated demonstration and possibly a plugin request.

Image

In inkscape this effect is called In and Out in Filters>Shadows and Glows

Image

It kind of makes the text semitransparent and adds drop shadow. Here it is in GIMP

Image

I wonder if there is a similar logo script for GIMP, and is it difficult to write such a script?

P.S. it's animated png, so please, use Mozilla Firefox browser or Opera to see the animation.
Google Chrome browser needs APNG extension installed.

im not sure, i understand your question

do you request a script for the animation or are you asking how the effect is achieved ?

A script for text effect.
Animation is just to demonstrate possible combinations depending on text and background colors.

Text isn't just filled with particular color and made semi-transparent. Gotta be a script that would stroke paths from the letters with color-to transparency gradient. Or alpha select and fill with shaped gradient. I don't know. That's why i'm asking script writers here how difficult it would be.

as far as i see, that is a duplicated blurred offsetted layer

you can do that by hand or by alpha selecting the text -> invert, and then apply a drop shadow

i did this by hand: Sans bold 205, Gaussian Blur: 20, Offset x/y: 12 (cut the offset layer with the alpha selected text)

No Esper, my text is semi-transparent, that is what my animation for, text changes depending on BG color.

You change background in your example and the drop shadow's not going to change, is it?

Here's what I mean

Or make a substruction of the blurred offset drop shadow from text main color and color-to alpha?

Not quite the same as above example with the same pattern fill but it seems to be doable in GIMP.
Anyway, too many steps, a good reason for writing a script, I believe.

Maybe I should have added text outline?

i think the outline comes from the dropshadow (which is knocked out by the text)
you can fill the text-bit of the layermask with a light grey, to get a semi transparent effect instead of black for full transparency

I've been thinking the same thing. The devil's in detail, tho. I took a closer look at inkscape's effect - the text color gradient is quite complicated, like a path stroke with gradient brush in our recent discussion on 'gradient along path' topic, don't you think?

why do you want to recreate this effect in Gimp when you can do it better in Inkscape ?

today i tried for the very first time to do something with Inkscape ( black text with a white stroke, that looked horribly in Gimp, but perfect in Inkscape) and import it to Gimp for further usage

i think its cool to use the best of both worlds

You're absolutely right, I have no problem with using Inkscape, but there are many others who don't_want_to/can't (maybe just yet) use it.

right, well we just just showed it can be done *lol*

i think its a good thing we have an Inkscape subforum here, time to make more use of it and see how good things can be combined for the benefit of all

I'm glad you're wrapping your head around Inkscape too. So much to discuss and we can always share our experiences with it.

Have you written a script yet?
But seriously, can you describe in few words the workflow?

The only suggestion - I would probably Gaussian blur text outline just a little bit.

K1TesseraEna the wokflow is simple and yes I have a script

1/ create a white text layer
2/ create a new transparent layer called color-layer and take a selection from from text layer
3/ fill the color layer with blue
4/ offset the color layer then blur the color layer
5/merge layers invert selection and clear, invert selection
6/color-to-alpha white
7/create animation
8/ done
