I was looking over a bit of GIMP history and it occurred to me that GIMP should have it's own day of celebration. I mean, why not? Everything else has a day.

I propose we celebrate on November 21st each year. That's the day GIMP was officially announced back in 1995.

Or, maybe another day would be more appropriate?

What do y'all think? :gimp

I'm game, but you have to understand I'm a filter/simulator guy and not a true artist (i.e, a poser; lol). :)

Good idea. Seems also to be close to the scheduled date for 2.8. There should be much rejoicing.

A GIMP day, cute idea. Why not. What to do to celebrate it though? A themed contest?

@cecilia:
Off-topic, but I'm a long-time Amiga fan albeit using Linux these days. I still own several working Amigas: A500, A1200, A4000 and of course my AmigaOne XE. ;)
My first ever computer art was done on my Amiga1200 (DeluxePaint IV, those were the days).

@Lyle, as long as you use Gimp (and G'mic) filters (at least part of the times) then you are not a poser, lol.
Celebrating a gimp day sound like a plan!

:ditto 2-ton. Lyle, you're no poser. A work of art can take on many forms and so can artists.

I was thinking more of a GIMP tribute/celebration thread but there is no reason why we couldn't hold some kind of a contest as well. :bigthup

Maybe a GIMP themed sig or banner contest, in addition to a tribute thread?

Fine ideas! I have not done these "sigs" before, they seem to be an artform with their own rules... Maybe I *should* try that.

Do not sell yourself short. I respect filter and plugin stuff very much. I learned a lot from about 65 year old Swedish lady about them. She was genius with subtle effects. Filters and plugins, with advanced math effects, are very addictive too... There is something unpredictably beautiful lurking there.

One thing I wonder is, you effect makers here are not using 3D software. I mean there's whole new dimension of effects there (pun intended  ). Also, there is creative environment where you can actually *code* pictures. Take good old Povray for example. You actually write your objects, materials, lights, effects etc. ...

Just been way too lazy to learn how to use and work with 3D apps Kimppi. Just usually fake it with the GIMP. :)

I know I'm seriously off-topic (sorry), but I just have to...

lylejk, I analysed some of your stuff, and though you *might* want to check this:

Nice geometrical play with Povray.

Gimping those would be nice twist, no?

DeluxePaint changed my life

I wouldn't have known about GIMP (and all the other programs I have used over the years) if it wasn't for DP and my Amiga.
I think that's worth celebrating! :jumpclap

We can use a twitter hashtag and try to make it a TT!

Way too much work to do with GIMP so I'll pass. lol

Still cool stuff. Was thinking of finding a way to create paper sculptures though (got emailed a few embedded pictures and my jaw dropped). Below is a yahoo search and I bet your jaws will drop too. :)

That would be pretty cool. Wonder how many tweeters would have to use #gimp tag to make the most discussed topics list?

Gimp Chat has nearly 2300 tweets but only 281 followers. :hoh

It will probably take more than 1 forum to get it done. I'm sure some of us are in more than one gimp-related forum, and we can work together to spread the word of the #gimpday hashtag.

I like this...it sounds fun!
