Lol @ Esper.
I must admit to being part of the boring crowd. I always keep the default screens because it's easier...oooh, I guess I am part of the lazy crowd, too!

it seems he isnt posting anymore :(

Sorry, I did not mean to steal the thread, Mr.Justice
BTW, the last post on that thread was exactly on the day I joined GC. So, I guess, that strips me off the alibi.
I need to call my lawer :bawl

@Anmal It was not spiders tentacles, Esper thinks it's

its obiously very good, but damn, that looks like an invasion of the bodysnatchers remix with a furry tentacle grabbing an (alien) egg :sneak

So don't be afraid, weren't you abducted by aliens recently?
Congrats on your 1000's, btw!

@jamac4k Why did you throw Mr.Wilber behind the bars? :hoh What are the charges, anyway?

I should have said, 'I like your style'. I don't have a custom splash; now that you called me out I guess I'd better get busy :paint

@ alc. Good job, alc. I used to have animated gifs as GIMP splashes too. Looks nice, can you make a smaller planet (Moon, Titan?) orbit the bigger one? I know you can do it, your animation skills are quite impressive.

@Odin OK, but if your family won't see you for a while, don't blame it on me, all right? :hehe

#AnMal: Maybe, i'm thinking how get the effect as if it had done oxyacetylene cutting, thinking about the smoke spots.

#K1TesseraEna, I'm trying with Wilber shade in carved effect.

Could we make a collection of splash for other users?.

Of course, we can.
There was a GIMP 2.8 splash contest 2 years ago on gimpusers.com but i don't think the contestants' works are/were avalable for download. We can go further and have our own contest. I love challenges, but on GC voting is not possible, I guess. Nevertheless, just a repository of gimp Slpashes is a worthy idea too.

you guys are far too quick for me today! or maybe it's me being far too slow for you.
anyway:

he4rty and 2-ton: you're definitely not boring, i think the default splash screens are well chosen!
alc59:really good splash screens, especially the animated one! and if you make a winter one with snow on it i hope you'll share it :)!
molly: what latitude are you on? i'm on 57. we don't have any snow here either, temperature around 39 F and i miss my old hometown where there's still snow and below freezing point!
esper: to put it in verse: "i know that expression so very well - you think i'm the scarlet pimpernel!"
k1tesseraena: thank you :). in fact, i wasn't abducted by aliens, i was the alien busy abducting poor innocent earthlings - so even less reason to be afraid, that may actually be my tentacles you have depicted.
jamac4k: oxyacetylene cut grid would be simply wicked!! at least give it a try!

These aliens.

So, my inner noob might be showing, but I have no idea how to change the splash screen for gimp.

@Molly, not only the wrong side of the border but the wrong state, ny sucks, got to be the worst state in the US
@k1Te, about orbiting a planet, do you know if something like that can be done with GAP. I don't know anything about GAP, never played with it, only ever used 2 of the entries in the menu, split video into frames and morph
Do you know of any GAP tuts for for me to try? thanks

@alc I don't know about GAP tuts, but I don't think it can be done with GAP faster than just using gimp. I would do it this way - make a path around big planet, made the smaller planet a brush and draw along the path changing brush size.

After some doodling in gimp and using the same materials ended up with this sort of paintball prank vandalizing mess.

very nice composition, K1te !

paper texture
great Yamamoto-esque midnight blue
sharp font
and the shrink selection on the splatters gives the whole thing a little extra oomph

Thanks, Esper!
I'm glad you've dissected my work!
Although, instead of selecting each and every splatter and shrinking, I made text outline and placed it on top,
also used a single bump map (bucket fill with rough canvas pattern) to bump canvas and splatters.

k1tesseraena: nice job! :jumpclap i think i would get along well with those vandals of yours - do you think they'd mind if i stole their idea and wrote "magic" instead of "manipulation" on my own splash? it comes closer to what the program does in my eyes, anyway :).
