And finally, here it is... Just before Easter :)

A new version of G'MIC, numbered 1.5.5.1, has been released.
http://gmic.sourceforge.net/

The full changelog for this version is available here :
http://www.flickr.com/groups/gmic/discu ... 962443902/

The main new feature of this version is the Inpainting [patch-based] filter that you will find in section 'Enhancement/' (in the GIMP plug-in), associated to a new native command -repair (for users of the CLI interface 'gmic'). It allows the reconstruction of missing image regions (defined by the user) by a quite smart algorithm that tries to automatically copy/paste and blend patches located around the masked area, You can see some examples of use below. The implementation of this filter is partially based on the code done by +Maxime Daisy during his Master thesis. Maxime is now a PhD student working in the image team at the GREYC laboratory (CNRS UMR 6072), in Caen / France. So thanks to him for his contribution to G'MIC !

More inpainting results are available here :

Source archive is already available. Binary packages are under construction. Any feedbacks are appreciated. Enjoy !

OK, got v1.5.5.1 and updated.

I'm not sure how to use the new filter. Do I make a mask on a new layer? Also, I get preview not available when I bring up the filter. G'MIC > Enhancement > Inpaint [patch-based] (just to let you know I went to the right place).

Using the Linux, 32-bit version.

That was intentional due to the amount of time the filter takes to do the operation.

Thanks bilbo. That doesn't tell me how to use the filter.

I have a painted mask on the top, transparent layer.

I have the image in the layer below the mask.

I open G'MIC > Enhancement > Inpaint, click and nothing happens.

Later edit: Ah! Merged the mask down and tried it. It worked. Need to adjust some of the settings. In one of the images I saw a layer boundary around the mask and assumed it needed to be on a separate layer. My bad.

How do I determine patch size? Tried several different sizes and get the same results. Any suggestions on other settings?

The binaries for Win64 have been put on the Download section in the G'MIC website.
This has been possible thanks to the great work of Samj, so thanks again Samj for your time (just for the anecdote, she told me some months ago that she won't do packages anymore for G'MIC, so she's doing this as a bonus).

Oregonian: the inpainting mask can be defined in two ways :
- Either you select the mode 'Mask by color', and in this mode you need a single layer to define your mask and your image at the same time (but you need to be sure your color does not appear somewhere else on the image!).
- Either you select the mode 'Opaque regions in top layer' and you define your mask as an opaque region in a transparent layer above your image. But in this case of course, you need also to select the 'Input Layers -> All' to make the filter working correctly !

Also, in your example, it seems your mask is not 'pure red' (there are probably small aliasing effects), and in this case it won't work at all (the algorithm expects only a single pure color for the mask).

Just to show, I get this with your image (having done a new mask, in 'pure' red).

I did use color #ff0000 (pure red). I used the pencil tool this time so there would be no antialiasing in the patch and that worked better. I used the default settings.

I tried it again and used your settings. Much better. Thank you David. I just need to work with it a bit more. This is a great new filter. :clap

Yes, setting the right parameters is quite essential for this filter :)
The important one are : 'patch size' and 'blending size'.
The patch size must be somehow related to the texel size of the texture surrounding your inpainting mask. The blending size tells about how 'smooth' the generated result will be. It depends on the context of course, so it is often better to work more locally, by repeating the filter on different (small) inpainting masks with different parameters when needed, than doing the inpainting in one shot.

If there are parts of the original mask that are remaining, this is probably because the mask color was not 'pure' and there was some shading in it. At least, using the pencil tool is mandatory to define the mask only with a single color.

I used ff0000 red, but I used a brush, not a pencil. I will try again.

Edit: I am working with the 64 bit version. I tried it again with the pencil and now it is almost perfect. I still don't understand the settings, especially the patch size, what does that do?

Still playing with it David; really like the new feature and thanks a heap samj for continuing to support the 64-bit platform. Definitely need to use pencil and not brush. Thanks for that hint (as I read it) O. :)

I tried to find information about texel size and also determining it and the info is scanty. How do you determine texel size?
