Really like this cool preset; been really experimenting with it the past few weeks. I created a user defined preset that I called softfocus based on G'MIC's Tonemapping preset, but I even tweaked it more for this result. I did do a few additional things, but 98% of the result was the result of this cool preset (see my tweaked settings below). :)

That's very nice, Lyle. How do we get it?

Tone Mapping is under Colors in G'MIC. Make the adjustments shown in Lyle's screenshot of the filter menu, save the preset (press the green plus sign) and then open .gmic_faves and rename it to soft focus. :)

So where did I go wrong? I get an error message with it in GMIC.

This is what it said in Faves

{Tone mapping}{Tone mapping}{gimp_map_tones}{gimp_map_tones_preview}{0.04}{0.48}{7.06}{314}{3}{0}

This is what I changed it to.

{Soft Focus}{Soft Focus}{gimp_map_tones}{gimp_map_tones_preview}{0.04}{0.48}{7.06}{314}{3}{0}

Aha! I got a little carried away with my name-calling. :mrgreen:

Now it's working.

{Soft Focus}{Tone mapping}{gimp_map_tones}{gimp_map_tones_preview}{0.04}{0.48}{7.06}{314}{3}{0}

I went back and looked at some of the other presets. Now it's working.

I had no idea presets were that easy to do.

:tyspin mahvin!

Right, it is easy peasy. Now you know you only need to change the first { } for name only. :)

Nice one ! Also, do you know that double-clicking on a Fave name allows you to rename it ?

I did David; that's how I renamed it (because coder I'm not). lol

Tone map preset is awesome. Can be noisy, but easily compensated for. Again, thanks for the gift you gave all of us David. :)

It reminds me of a cross between sketch and chalk.Add some real nice edging for definition and a very small blur. :lol
Well that's what it looks like to me. :)
Thanks for the preset and the tutorial on adding them folks!

Some folk at other forums that I frequent didn't like the pushed glow effect, so I adjusted the sliders some and eventually got this result. Not hard to play with sliders (already closed GIMP so not going to redo to post those settings; lol). :)

Throw a few of PC's presets at it after using this technique, interesting stuff.

Hi.

I often see references like the following for G'MIC

{Soft Focus}{Tone mapping}{gimp_map_tones}{gimp_map_tones_preview}{0.04}{0.48}{7.06}{314}{3}{0}

How do I apply these settings in G'MIC to be able to use them?

Thanks

I added a ".gmic_faves" file as instructed and copied that line:

{GN- CHIAROSCURO}{Graphic Novel FX}{gimp_photocomix_booost2}{gimp_photocomix_booost2}{1}{4.36364}{10.4727}{5}{20}{0.12}{14}{0}{0.54}{2.9}{9}{0}{0.93}{1}{0.5}{0.54}{0.78}

that's all that is in the faves file......but when I tried to run it all I got was what you see in the screen grab.

what does this mean?

Ok Cecilia i will try to fix that tonight

that means that the presets were created for a older version of the filter, and they need to be updated

Alas i can't found a way to automatize so i must do manually anyway i should be able to convert this night all the old Graphic Novel preset, and tomorrow that for Graphic Boost

i also made a couple of new ones ...so stay in tune

i think are 2 or 3 weeks i always delay to do it ! :gaah

So i am switching on my desktop were i have still the old preset with the corresponding code, then i have on the notebook to
start the new version and copy the setting manually and then save as new preset,
...this to be repeated a lot of times, i fear i did at least 40 presets, maybe more :hoh

a bit boring but i am going to do now :seeya

PS
if you saved your own preset on older Graphic Novel or Graphic boost version and you want them updated to work with the new version . please post them now !

I've never had any presets. and i never had a ".gmic_faves" file.
so, i guess, at the moment, there is nothing to save
