it seems your goal is to emulate photoshop tuts as close as possible with layerfx
i wonder if layerfx needs a little workover

include the diagrams into the Contours dropdown menu
and when i used Stroke on my examples i noticed the line is all jaggy, i would get much better results if i stroked the path

Nice job, guys!
I rarely used some of Outer glow effects, now after seeing your charts I definitely learned a thing or two, and now realize what I've been missing all that time!
Very useful charts. Thanks!

Kite - You're welcome, at least for my part. It's all Espers fault. He started it. :)

Esper - Yes I agree. LE does need some work to make it easier to use. As long as we're wishing, let's change the whole thing and have it written in Python or better yet, included in GMIC as a separate section. that way you would get a preview window so you don't have to go back and forth twenty times to figure out the exact combination of settings you want. You could then create/assign presets to use. GMIC would be perfect for this cuz the sliders would make it easy to get close then tweak the settings from there.

hm i disagree here
in my opinion it would be best to have it as an extra menu because in that way its most easily accessible
also i never felt the need for a preview window, because the preview on/off function works great for me

the advantage of an scm script is that its easily editable
i do this a lot, translating and assigning the location of the script - its a great way to personalize your Gimp
but then again i dont know about the differences and advantages between a scm script and a python script

Sounds like for your purposes, a script would be better. Still, it couldn't 'hoit' to have both. I'm not sure which one came first the Python version or the FX Foundry versions. I deleted all those a long time a go but the point is there are always folks trying to make things better and I'm surely grateful for that. I do hope that LE gets some attention in the near future.

im resurrecting this thread because this topic comes up again and again but not all people seem to get it

so i made all the contour curves that you can now download and put in your user - curves folder

some of these curves have been made by values from the layerfx-script and some of them i have made on my own - freehand so to speak
in my experience these curves dont have to look exactly like seen on the chart, a crude approach works just as well

to clarify: these curves are applied to the ALPHA CHANNEL of a gaussian blurred object, like an inner glow for example

Thanks Esper...All these presets come up as dates in my drop down in the curves dialogue. How do I know what they are? Can they be named?

The 2012 ones are the same. They are Dracs metal and they are just dates too.

hm, it doesnt look like that in my Gimp

put the curves in your user-curves-folder
import the curves and then add to your favorites (=Presets)
a menu pops up
here you can enter the description
i recommend: "Contours - contour-name"

I have a real mess now, I went by your steps I think. I unzipped them and then tried to import them from there, I made the contours folder but nothing is in there so I tried again and now I got 4 folders. I tried to get rid of them to start over but I can't delete them.

you can delete your Presets under 'Manage Settings' (thats below import and export)

it seems you cant import a whole folder, you have to import each preset on its own

Is that what you did Esper? one at a time into the same contour folder, I tried that and every time I want to do another one it wants me to name a folder for it and then it makes a new folder.

no idea molly,
i import curves twice in my gimp history, once for Draconian's chrome curves and the second time, today when i tried to assist you with installing the curves

its actually not required to add them to your presets, you could always import them, but i admit thats not very convenient

EDIT: wait, you put it in you user/curves folder
thats one folder for all your curves
i guess you have Drac's metal curves ? well then put it in the same folder

Ok, thanks. Well maybe I will ponder some more then.

Even when I add one, when I click the contour folder, there is nothing there. I can add them into my user Gimp-2.8.2 curves folder and they show up but then what good are they when they are not named,

@ Esper
thank for the curves i :hi5 i grabbed them all, trying now something ...

No no any advantage here because there is no any difference:
you may edit/translate the location of a python script exactly in the same way. as for script-fu

Just open a py script, you will usually find the "register block " in the same position expected for a script fu , and edit it exactly in the same way

It is the same even for plugins ...but then would be needed recompile the plugins to apply the changes )

As you wrote personalize that is trivial , personally i found Layer menu/Layer Effects the the most adapt location

I believe the preview on/off function only implemented in the python script , because script fu can't give any sort of preview
i found preview always useful , the more accurate the more useful

:yes As gmic script would be perfect !! :hi5

Also because with the last changes Gmic may create also new Layer Effects that would be impossible in gimp ,( because the less blending modes available in gimp)
I really don't want put my mind in coding now (i should do soon to update my gmic filter but i don't want promise more ) BUT i may try something that may be coded, i mean find the manual steps to automatize.

Did you already requested here viewforum.php?f=28 or in the flickr gmic group ? ;)

PS
About edit menu location :
Respect most script edit Layer Effects is a pain and must be done more carefully because is not 1 script but a dozen of scripts ... and this multiply x 12 the possibilities of typo or other errors

Here 1 example help this a py script to add transparency support to all layers
###########################################

from gimpfu import *

def py_add_alpha(img, drawable):
pdb.gimp_image_undo_group_start(img)
layerlist = img.layers

for l in layerlist:
if not l.has_alpha:
pdb.gimp_layer_add_alpha(l)
pdb.gimp_image_undo_group_end(img)

register(
"py_add_alpha",
"Add alpha on all layers",
"Add alpha on all layers",
"dd",
"dd",
"2011",
"<Image>/Layer/Transparency/Alpha to all...",
"RGB*, GRAY*",
[],
[],
py_add_alpha)

main()

The part in red is self explanatory, i highlighted the last line because , as for script fu the most commune error after the edit
is the last line , word or parentheses of the original script that ended MIA (Missed In Action :wh )

No no any advantage here because there is no any difference:
i dont do this anymore...
it was one of my obsessions to edit scripts - i now use the scripts as they come

and the python layerfx is better than the scm - i think i dont even have the layerfx-scm installed anymore

I guess it is a matter of personal choice. Everyone has their own favorite scripts, plug-ins etc.
