This should be my first gmic filter ..
except then everytime i decide to sit to try to finish to code, i feel the urge to first make a koffe , then to ligh a cigarette, and do some nervous walk in circles around the computer table

then i force myself to sit again and to concentrate on the code...but after 1 minute again i feel the need for a koffe, or maybe a tea because i already got far too much koffe and is past midnight, and another cigarette ,or better a walk because i already smoked too much....

finally i sit again ,but just to repeat the loop....

Not sure when i will get out of the loop, hopefully before fall asleep...in the while just to introduce a variation to the loop i login here to offer a preview of my filter

this is Kool Draft, with "Painter's Touch" option enabled

Image
New Filter Test : Kool Draft+ Add Colours+ Painter's Touch by PhotoComiX, on Flickr

here are detailed all the steps (that hopefully i will automatize in a GMIC filter)
http://www.flickr.com/photos/photocomix ... 196043279/

well time to go back to look to the code...well maybe would be better first make another koffe,...no better a tea or maybe a glass of water!...or maybe a walk...or a shower

but then i will sit and give the final touch to the code...well after a koffe or better a tea...No too much caffein better a glass of water with some lemon...ooopss ...maybe i finish the lemons ...so maybe i must first go to look for a night shop were to buy some lemons...

but then i will sit and finish that code....yes i will finish today...ooopss is already tomorrow :gaah

That result does look pretty cool PC; look forward to your preset when you are ready to release it. :)

Ah, PhotoComix, that's wonderful. It's all that coffee, tea and nicotine that's helping you. :hehe

as variant to my loop i tested on another image ,this time without "Painter's Touch"

Attachment:

just to share my actual worry , my cocktail include 2 no-linear filters (pencil and sketch )
no_linear means that what they do change ,even dramatically, if changes image size.

and since i don't want make a filter with dozens of sliders, but very few , trying to hardcode most of parameters in a way that may work well on images of different sizes is giving me headhaches.

(the other solution, make a filter with 2 or 3 dozens of sliders, :wh and a 600 pages manual to explain what each slider is for and how they interact each other would make happy Einstein ,in case he was reincarnated in a CG artist, but i fear will be not much appreciated by others)

More really cool results. You have a master's touch with those filters.

That castle filter was off the charts cool, PC. I like the softness of your top image, too. The new preset David added to G'MIC for transferring layer colors is awesome as well. Lots of new possibilities all coming in at once.

photo comix: this is obviously an ancient thread - did you ever finish this script? i've tried all the stuff under "testing - photo comix" but have never got a result in any filter that even resembles these.

Yes i did finish the filter but it has some ..if not flaws at least some spiky corners :

1) it is slow

2 ) Result changes dramatically according to the size of the image to edit

In more simple words if you edit a image large 1600 x 1200 and then you scale down to , let say 800x600 you will have a result,
If instead first you scale down your image to 800x600 and then you run the filter with same values result would be very different

In my workflow i usually do the first ,i work on large images and eventually i scale then down for the web as very last step, not even a last step because i don't scale down the original but only the copy to export
...this to say that is sort of tuned to give the best results on large images, (and so would result even slower because of size of image to edit )
Not to say that can't edit more tiny images but working large first seems to give a more accurate preview (see also next point..) and more allow to dose better intensity by scaling down (i would discourage to scale up the result if not slightly )

3) the preview is not too to trust
And i can't do nothing to improve the preview :
the filter combine several other gmic filters , all with a preview more or less diverging from the final results and combine also multiplied the inaccuracy of the preview

For those 3 reason i never added to my gmic source but i may add if requested

It is true that i lose the original code in a HD crash BUT luckily i should have a copy in my Flick mail ,so should be easy to recover, i never "polished" well but i may give a look to update it, ... anyway should work also without updates i may search it in my old PM

And/Or i may explain how to replicate manually , i believe i already did a how but was not submitted as tutorial but was a comment to a topic in the Art Board (maybe not even started by me ..maybe something on creepy Houses in the Art board

Anyway i may rewrite , ...don't expect a long tut ,are just 3 step , run 2 filter and merge the results, so will be a very short how to ...well what i should do first tomorrow after breakfast, recover the code or explain the correspondent manual steps
(i may include preset for the setting used )

Let me know ..tomorrow i have free time

There is so much cool information here at Gimp Chat, it's great when someone finds one of these older threads. Cheers to Fullback66, and AnMal!

odinbc: this place is a gold mine of useful old threads :).
photo comix: do you remember exactly which filter you used for the first of the bw images you combined?

Sure !
i forgot to say that the image there are clickable , and clicking the first you get this http://www.flickr.com/photos/photocomix ... 196646566/

and there you will see that is pencil , more exactly GMIC/BW/Pencil i can say used with very very low values for amplitude and...
oh well for the first couple of sliders, the value i used were far lower then default, for the rest was the default

But again note that size, image size here is very important, at medium size that may even look just as BW , at original size here http://farm5.staticflickr.com/4131/5196 ... f53f_o.jpg you may see that the pattern of the pencil filter is even too evident

to be true i initially created this filter to nicely "artistically " break up that pattern (A pattern often created by the pencil filter in homogeneous area with not details ) pattern that is not bad but for sure not always desiderable

the other filter used is Sketch , the layer with the "sketch " filter has a double use , the first is make that pattern discussed above less obvious and repetitive, the other is to enrich and add more detail to the pencil layer that give the basic structure

As last step the original could be used to add colors
with the same technique i used to edit old washed out ganesha images
1) dup of the original is slightly blurred ,used on top in color mode, almost never at full opacity (let say from 50 to 85)
2) another dup of the original, also blurred but with different intensity go on the very top in overlay mode (or if the case to push on darkening in multiply mode

About the (gaussian blur) in 1 and 2, the final sharpness derive in the very largest part from the BW layers below,
blur the colour layer allow to merge sharp colour noise and/or sharp colours blotch that the colour mode often create , especially if used with high opacity,

The amount of blur may even be dramatic with the only limit to avoid colors "washing out" their natural space

About blur also the topmost dup in overlay mode, and blur different of a different amout :
again used in this way blur don't give a sensation of blur and here has a almost opposite effect, to give more apparent depth

Very last...the blur i just described is really not needed if as last step is used Anisotropic Smoothing on the visible (e A:S preset was is the Painter's Touch Option
