i think i got tricked by K1te again :mrgreen:

he casually dropped a tutorial, making me believe it means nothing at all, while complimenting me on my tutorial

of course i took the bait - the innocent non-smoker i am :?

that wasnt easy to replicate - and i still dont know how they get the blue glowing light effect with dodge, so my smoke is greyish-white

esper: nice smoke! it's really irritating about that coloured light effect, though - in the tutorial it's like there's a change of saturation as well as a change of value and i don't see anything like that ever when i use the dodge layer mode.

Maybe it is from the filter in PS. It says "Blend Mode to Color Dodge" Gimp doesn't have a color dodge unless I am reading it wrong. Do you think that is where they got the blue?

no molly, but as Ronounours said in this thread:
viewtopic.php?f=28&t=6399

Ronounours wrote:
Color dodge and burn are named simply dodge and burn.

and i tried soft dodge from G'MIC as well

so either Ronounours is wrong or soemhting else is going on, that i dont see

shucks. I like yours anyway. I think it looks like real smoke more than the blue PS one does.

That is a conspiracy theory in the making!

The same here - I could not replicate it in PS6, I made an attempt in GIMP about 2-3 weeks ago and ended up with this

I think there is a step or two missing in that tutorial.

heres how i made the smokey text:

01. make weird text as in this tutorial
viewtopic.php?f=23&t=6406
in this case it can be a bit blurry - we want that

Image

02. duplicate text layer and apply Motion Blur on duplicate

Image

align MotionBlurred layer a bit

03. set MotionBlurred text to 'Difference' and without the BG, use 'New from Visible'

Image

04. apply 'Filters -> Distorts -> 'Ripples'
once vertical and once horizontal

Image

05. duplicate twice, set upper two layers on 'Screen' and the first Smoke-layer to 'Saturation' 30%
offset 'Screen' layers a bit

Image

@Esper, I like that smoky look a lot. I made your tute into two parts in one pdf so I could have them all in one place if anyone is interested, it is posted below. I will try it later too.

It shows in your screen shots that you did them both vertical. Is that just the wrong scr shot?

04. apply 'Filters -> Distorts -> 'Ripples'
once vertical and once horizontal

thats a mistake, the one with Amplitude 9 is the vertical and the other one is horizontal

but its not really a tutorial, just a quickinfo for the basic steps how i made it, you have to make it your own

maybe the waved text could be improved, but Ripple was the best filter i could find for the job

EDIT: i updated the screenshot
