I created this and a few others using a combination of filters in G'MIC. It's what I call my "Close, but no cigar" collection. I am currently using the technique on a human image, I'll post that when done.

Here is the flower:

The FBI seal: (no I don't try to pass myself off as a Federal agent, but did follow the the web buzz about the rights to use it, etc...)

Result looks pretty good Mahvin. I've toyed with all kinds of dithering techniques over the years (since I was introduced to the concept when I was part owner of an Offset printing company; no longer of course). I've yet to see a panacea, but do like your results. :)

How about posting info on your technique?

That is an excellent effect.

I like mostly the children (but not his bg ) and the flower (that is flawless )

on the children there is a effect that may be nice may even be decrative but i personally try to try to avoid a sort of Moire
(that is perfect on FG ,the baby, but may be too evident and repetitive on the BG)

I'll try and crank out a tutorial on the steps I took (I'll be retracing my steps, blindly, as I didn't make notes of the original process as I was going along). For a "quick explanation", it involved making 3 duplicate layers of the same image.

Everything is done in G'MIC! No adjustments outside of G'MIC needed.

Open the image you want to "stipple". In G'MIC, convert it to B&W (found under Colors menu) I used default settings. Select OK.

Duplicate this image twice. Turn off visibility of topmost layer, switch to middle layer, set mode to Overlay.

In Colors menu, select B&W dithering, reduce Gamma to .67. Select Ok.

Turn on visibility to top layer, set mode to Overlay. In G'MIC, under Contours, select Gradient Norm.

Settings are as follows:
Smoothness: .24
Linearity: .54
Min. threshold: zero
Max. threshold: 61.04
Negative colors ticked.
Select ok.

New processed image from above settings:

I love the effect and I love stippling! I would love to get a true stippled look. These are my stippled peanuts, hand stippled (dotted) when I was in college. It took about 3 weeks to do and is made up of approximately 3000 dots. I restarted several times until I got the look I wanted. I still have some of my older attempts. The original hand stippled image is poster size!

SO it is greyscale dithering, not B&W dithering?

Thanks for the tut, mahv. My stippling doesn't show a lot but it is there and I like the look.

Original image here.

It also looks nice with the original image set to grain merge over the results.

@RobA: Under G'MIC its the B&W Dithering option under Colors menu.

@O: that's pretty darn impressive.

Thanks guys. I like all of the ones you have done. In particular, I loved seeing the pictures of yourselves done that way. Totally way cool.

Every image is awesome! I'm still working on finding other stippling methods, too.
