I saw something similar to this on the internet and accidentally discovered a different look altogether using layer effects/inner glow while I was fooling around with it.

Looks pretty cool to me.
Are you going to do a tutorial on it?

Not too difficult to do actually just just a lot of steps and several layers. I think I can remember most of the steps but this ain't no tut!

1. Made a text layer and centered it.
2. Duplicated the text layer, select>grow 5 pixels, then bucket fill with gray.
3. I used the erase tool at different settings to remove parts the gray text layer to create the segments, duplicated, blurred the dup about 5 pixels, then bump mapped the original gray text layer about 5 then deleted the blurred layer.
4. New transparent layer "yelow", alpha to selection the gray text layer and skrink 5 pixels and bucket fill with yellow and blur about 2 or 3 (can't remember exactly).
5. New layer for the bolts and used a brush I had.
6. New layer for the cord and drew a random pattern with brush set to a narrow width using the original gray color. Once the cord was draw in I went back and carefully erased the parts I wanted to look like it was passing underneath the text.
7. Duplicated the cord layer, blurred the dup about 5 and bump mapped the original cord layer about 5, then deleted the blurred cord layer.
8. Merged the original text layer and the grey text segment layer then did the layer effect inner glow to get the neon look.
9. I merged the the two text layers (except the inner glow layer) and did a drop shadow.
10. I bucket filled the background with the metal plate texture I had and overlayed a rust layer using hard light mode and adjusted the curves to lighten it up a bit.
11. I thinkthe last thing I did was to make a new layer and rendered some rather turbulent plasma, desaturated and overlayed the background layer with it.

somewhere in there I drew in the end of the cord and put the prongs on it.

Like I said it's not a tut but If you know your way around gimp you can probably figure it out from this explanation.

Result looks cool Drac. Way too much work for a filter guy like me. lol

I hear you loud and clear. Since the earth is 3/4's water and only 1/4 land, it stands to reason we should be doin' more fishing than plowing anyway. LOL
