First, though I do like my previous efforts, they did require the voronoi stipple program. This tut does not, so it's all GIMP/G'MIC. :gimp

ref: http://www.fontplay.com/freephotos/sixt ... 06-016.jpg

First choose a target. Then right click on the layer dialoge and add alpha Channel (this is important). Now run GIMP's Mosaic filter with the following settings:

Dup this result and on the base layer, run G'MIC's Dilation preset with the following settings:

On the top layer Gaussean blur with the default 5 setting and merge all layers. Pretty much we are done. Now for the grout step. Choose a grainy texture and then create a new base layer with that texture. Then, on the base layer, run bumpmap with default settings as shown below:

Now my final result, I have to admit that I did some additional tweaking; this is the nuance that I can't really outline, but it's to my taste; the above pretty much is good enough for most. :)

Pretty easy to follow...just guessed at the size, went with 800 pix wide, and added some Photocomix colors in G'mic to boost colors.

Photo stolen from Lyle, heh. Actually this is on google images, just search Lylejk and there are pages and pages of Lyle's art!!!

Why not add a little Inkscape Jam Spread to the mix. :)

Great tut Lyle, thanks. The last image with Jam Spread looks almost like bubblewrap.

Lyle I hope you don't mind but I made it into a short script I added sel-guass-blur at the end, but would like to know if any settings should be made variable in the menu. So far it only has a choice for grout, while everything else has used the settings shown in the tutorial.

Definitely appreciate that Graechen. Wish I could code myself, but am too lazy to learn. lol

The purpose of the blur is to eliminate the seam between the top original and the lower expanded result. May not even be the mose efficient way to do this, but it's cheap and dirty. lol

:)

Oh; wonder if it can be done all in G'MIC or not; it would be call to be an all G'MIC preset, but I'm not sure how to do the mosaic step in G'MIC itsel (GIMP's mosaic just seems to look better then G'MICs to me). :)

trying to catch up on the tuts here..
when i try to right click on a layer, nothing happens.
so when i go to layer/transparency/add alpha channel,it opens a new layer..
never had that problem before
also, when i open the mosaic filter,it doesn't show all the options that are on the tut

help anyone?

I just tried it and all it does is add a transparent layer to what you already have. If you click delete on it, it should go transparent

Did you try rebooting? lots of times this straightens things out. If this is a first time thing, that might do it. You could start there.

ok,rebooted,works now,thank You Molly :)
but the mosaic filter seems to be missing options from lyle's description
on mine,it shows either squares or octagons, not both together and no light or color directions
