Akky just posted a question and a image that may come handy as example

The question was how get a diamond texture from lines as

Image
Original - Akky Patterns by PhotoComix_Mandala, on Flickr

first we may duplicate the layer flip horizontally and change layer mode
mode may be normal at 50 opacity

or multiply, or grain extract, darken only or difference

blue come from grain extract

this difference

Anyway all this are not seamlessy not in both direction, to get a seamless tile we may copy the visible and flip, vertically if before we flip horizontally( or vice versa )

as here both merging were done in multiply mode

OR we may use mirrors to create seamless tile, and even to multiply the tile size without loosing quality

here i used a central mirror array: the original is in the center mirrored up down at left and at right

just to confuse even more... :hehe rotate or flip before mirror will create other variants

Anyway also the normal mirror along x and y axis give cool result, again all seamless...each seams in the original create several seamless variants when the image is mirrored along both axes

Here again a 3x3 mirror array

another variation

PS i did nothing to modify the colors ,color shift is collateral effect of the layer mode used

I think David needs to add Layer FX to his mirror array filter. This would make plaid patterns simple to make from one image, and allow us to output all the experimental creations.

what you mean for add layer fx ?

i would not like confuse flip with mirror at least in this context:
the layer fx i used if so may be called is create a duplicate flip and change his mode ,
the option i see useful are

flip horizontally, flip vertically, rotate 90°& crop (crop away not overlapping area)

for Merging

normal at 50% opacity (that should be identical to gmic "average mode)
multiply (if the image is not too dark )
lighten only (to create simmetrical highlight )
darken only (symmetrical shadow)
also difference and grain extract may give interest result but less often

then the result may be eventually mirrored,
So a new hypotetical GMIC filter would have:

1 a module to dup and flip and/or rotate the dup
2 a module for merge (average, multiply, darken , lighten, grain extract, difference )
3 option to repeat 1 in the other direction (if as example the first was a horizontal flip, repeat but with a vertical flip ) with same or different merging mode
4 optional mirror module

that basically may create seamless pattern from everything you could image

Humm ...a Symmetrifier filter ?

The ability to add layer modes within regular array, AND an opacity slider.

i see..
i will let the mirror array filter as it is, it does what expected and more options may confuse

but i think is a good idea for a new filter that may incorporate mirror array option (and code)
, ...a bit as how i did for the psychedelic glasswork tyler

i may try to do a similar filter

the idea would be
dup the layer
flip or rotate
merge

optionally repeat with a different rotation or flip

optionally apply mirrors

basically the step of the tutorial but i am not sure a similar filter will be appreciated from who didn't read the tutorial, will require some sensitivity to chose the right image

i mean the magic sometimes is in the simplest things , duplicate layer flip or flop , mirror...it is not a complex routine maybe is one of the simplest, i fear that a filter may hide the magic of the single simplest step without speed up so much
